Who Else Is Setting Their First Hatch? Hatch Along! ~UPDATES!!~

I have a total of 3 thermometers in use. The one that came with the incubator (LG) is sitting at "floor-level", so on top of the turner. I doubt the accuracy and speed of temp change on this one, but it gives me a point of reference. I also have an Accurite weather station to measure temp and humidity. The temp is off by about 3 degrees (3 whole degrees!!!). For accuracy, I use a Brinsea Spot-Check, made specifically for use in incubators. It has a much tighter window of reading and is very responsive to change. The next time I hatch, I plan to find a water wiggler and put a probe in that. I love the idea of having a better feel for the interior egg temp!

As for stabilizing the temperature, the key for me has actually been leaving my a/c vents open. Alot of peeps on the boards say this is a no-no, but you have to find what works for your situation. In my first hatch, I closed them...thinking that there would be a draft created. Essentially, I shut all of the hot air in the room and had temp spikes that I could not account for. Leaving them open this go 'round (because I had chicks in a brooder who needed some air flow), I haven't had nearly the issues with my incubator, steady temps, lower average temps, and higher humidity (easier to control). Go figure!

I just set my olive eggs (12) under a broody on wednesday night and 4 EE in a homemade incubator today. I am so excited first time I am trying to hatch eggs. Yeah I hope to get at least 4 pullets. Fingers crossed!!!!

I will do my first candling Wednesday! Everything is going well, but i know that the egg in the bator is a double yolker!!!!! HHHEEELLLPPP!!!!!!! What is the chance of twins surviving? I dont want the chicks to die! Will one chick get bigger than the other and eat its yolk, too or will there be two? My worst fear is that there will be one with extra body parts!!! HHHEELLLPP MMEE!!!

While I've never had a double yolker, I know that one member recently had one that hatched two precious chicks! Search on the boards from the past month...I believe it was in August. One chick was a little smushed (not really deformed) and smaller, but I believe both are happy and healthy. If you do leave it in, be sure to mark it. I don't think that they are able to hatch without assistance.

How do I know if I should call it quits with the egg or keep it in. I candle on wednesday, so I'll know by then and keep you all updated! I will post a separate thread on the double yolker thing. Thanks!

What day of the hatch is Wednesday? If it is Day 7, I would advise waiting until Day 10 to make any firm decisions. Many people choose to candle on Days 7, 14, and 18 only. If you are following that strategy, I would say wait for Day 14 (unless anything starts stinking or weeping) and ensure that you have no development before pitching them. If by Day 10 or 14 you see just clear wide open space, they aren't keepers. By Day 10 you should see a good solid dot, veins, and movement (maybe...don't freak if there isn't tons of movement at the exactly second you're looking).
