We know it comes this time of year. Parents get their kids living toys instead of plastic eggs. I'm holding out on the ordering of some silkie chicks (still looking for SQ ones though

) until after Easter. Then I'm going to get me another male bunny since Dewey dug out of her pen from the horrible storm we had last night and get some bantams. Last year we had a lady ask why the chick grew. Um.... because it's a chick?

I saw neon colored chicks at the feed store last weekend and couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor little guys...
I hate to think what their fates will be, but I can't save them all. right?

i feel ur pain our feedstore doesnt even have a light on the neon babies

THere was a leaflet going around that said something like "join the NO CHIX FOR EASTER crusade" then it went on to explain how people buy the chix and the kids squeez them, don't feed then, let them get cold, etc...because they think they are toys. Then it explains how stores can help by not selling the colored chix.

I wish I could find it...

I know I'm going out on a total limb here, but I really hope to get chicks for Easter.

BUT

There's a huge difference between me and the children of those people you complain about. I've done a year of research and have even cared for chicks before and just had to give them away. They've done no research at all.

And when they grow into chickens? I'll keep them as layers, maybe hatch another batch or two. When thiers grow into chickens? They abandon them.

When the people buy animals for thier children who don't know how to care for them, it makes me mad. Also when the kid loses interest and abandons the poor thing.

Educate yourself before you get the animal!

*stepping off my soapbox*

I hope I didn't offend anyone.

LOL, when I saw the posting I was wondering "waiting for leftovers from Easter dinner???"

That said, I too think education is key in this. Its sad all the people who get a chick or rabbit on spur of the moment.

I look on craigslist and freecycle just to get what everyone doesnt want right after Easter. I hate seeing living animals given as gifts.
Not becouse I need any more pets, but so I can find a proper home for them and not just give them to the next person who thinks they need them.(and only have them for a week or 2)

I got my silkies as an Easter gift and my chicken dog as my Christmas gift. Not because they didnt know what to get me. Because I wanted a dog and she was waiting for a moment worth giving a gift.

Only the day after and already found a rabbit. It's a shame but I am glad I found one. Dunno if I should post a

A bunch of the AZ BYCers posted "adopting unwanted easter chicks" CL ads. I am one of them---I am hoping people were smart about it this year!
