Who else is waiting for that first egg?

I feel like I have been waiting forever! Went out this morning and one of my White Leg Horns layed her first egg!!! Then went out a few hours later and found TWO more new warm eggs from my other White Leghorn and my one Rhode Island Red! No eggs for weeks and then 3 layers in one day!!!! I'm so EGG-CITED!!!

City farm, I have looked where I've seen them most, I keep looking all around.
I'm afraid Im just missing them because they're brown eggs(dels/RIR)they don't go far from the coop, and if I do find them how do I get them in the boxes?

FINALLY!! Today we got our very first egg! We're "city slickers" so this is a pretty big deal for us. So exciting! But...our big girl, Ethel, was very upset when we took the egg and is still complaining about it 6 hours later. These chicks are going to break my heart! Just thought I'd share a few pics of the tiny little egg (a tad bigger than the golf balls my husband put in the nesting boxes) and our proud chick. Way to go, Ethel Mertz! We're proud of you! Now...for you pros out there, are we supposed to eat the first eggs? My husband read somewhere that we're not supposed to. Please let me know. Thanks!

I had a hen once that laid her eggs under where our dryer vend is on the outside of the house. We just thought she wasn't laying... until the smell. Kind of genius if the eggs had been fertial.

If we are not supposed to I should have been ill from it years ago. They are fine just small. I do crack my eggs into a glass bowl in case there is a meaty bit in there or bit of blood. It happens sometimes and will not kill you but it is kinda gross. I would hate to be cooking a cake and hubby hanging out in the kitchen see a blood streaked egg get into the batter. ( I think he would pass out )

Ha ha! I would pass out too! Thanks for the tip. Right now we are just admiring it! I'm sure we will at least crack it open and check it out. So, do your chickens yell up a storm when they find their eggs missing? Our Ethel was very upset.

They do for the first few eggs they lay or if I go get one that was laid within a half hour. She will calm down about it in a week or two. It is heart wrenching when they are freaked out about it. Looking at you like a kidnapper or something.

It takes a bit for them to get into the routine but if you want to distract her so you can grab the egg without her seeing you do it you can toss a bit of sunflower seeds in the run to occupy her. Makes her happy and you happy at the same time.

Just went to do the closing and gather any eggies and I found that Victoria had laid a SECOND egg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Her first one was in the run and broken so I was unable to actually get a good look at it but THIS is the second egg and it was inside the coop!!!!!!



Shown here next to my largest egg layer's egg. (Black Australorp age 5 laid the one on the right.)

Shown below next to the EE's egg that had not laid in 2 years but laid the one on the right a few days ago. I think the color of Victoria's egg is a bit darker but still pretty.


Very exciting to be getting new layers up and running. I am HAPPY she is laying a nice size and shape already.
