Who else is waiting for that first egg?

All that complaining last night paid off. Today I was rewarded with this! And my mom said whining would never get me anything.

I think we got our first egg from our lone Speckled Sussex hen.I found a solid medium brown egg in the nest box today. Yesterday she had went to great lengths to dig herself a nest infront of the nesting box which made me cock an eyebrow at her.

Speckles has always been a sweety. I wish we had about 10 more just like her.

CONGRATS TO ALL!!! Love the pictures and the counts! FYI...doz medium eggs at our local grocery $4.69!!! US is importing eggs for the first time due to avian flu. Those like me who will have extra eggs due to chicken math, could I ask you to share a doz or 2 with a neighbor in need or a food bank?

I WAS waiting, but I was surprised to find one this evening, one of the big girls did it! I went to the hardware store to buy straw, and I put some of it in a bin and didn't put a lid on it. This evening someone decided to nest in it and lay their first egg! Still waiting on the other girls. I have 1 buff orpington, 1 delaware, 2 black cochin, 2 golden sex links, they are all 18 weeks as of tomorrow. Then I have 4 easter eggers (they were suppose to be ameraucanas, got duped) that are 13 weeks as of tomorrow

Isn't it fun? She liked the straw! Yup, I got duped with 3 EE's too. My Pops brought them home from a feed store. 2/3 are laying blue eggs though, so it's all good. So exciting when they start laying!

Quote: It was pretty hilarious. I think she must have done it while I was working. She came out of the coop and started bucking and Oreo was bucking right back (I have NEVER heard him do that lol). I put straw on their shelves but they like to kick most of it off, so I thought it was funny that she nested in the bin of it! I'm going to be curious about whether she'll continue to lay white or if it will switch to brown like some of the other hens.

Just went outside and found this soft shelled egg laying on the ground right off the porch. I have been finding one or two each morning when I unlock the coop. Not sure who is laying them. Now I am wondering if someone is laying them at night. They usually are in coop by around 8 and it is 7:30 now and it was still warm when I found it. Been finding the soft shelled ones for about a week now. So since I found this one outside does this mean that this girl won't realise she is suppose to go into coop to lay? Geez these gals know how to cause me concern...

Diney, do they have anything inside the coop to nest and lay their eggs in? Mine apparently enjoyed laying hers in a bin of straw today lol (first egg). I have nesting shelves, but I guess they'd rather have something sort of enclosed so I will be working on that one soon!

Yes, I have nesting boxes and am getting 6 eggs a day from the other girls, I have 8 gals and so not sure who it is. They have oyster shell to eat. A mystery to me
