Who else took the chick plunge! (Pics on post 101)

I just made an order from Ideal.

20 Americauna Pullets
10 Silver Laced Wyandotte Pullets
10 Black Cochin Pullets
20 French Guinieas Straight Run

I also bought the 'insurance' so they wouldn't stick a bunch of roos in there for 'warmth'.

I can't wait til they get here, I had lost a lot of my previous chickens to a predator. I'm not liking not having any eggs for sale, or for that matter, having to buy eggs in the store for personal use! And I miss my girls!

The plunge experience continues. I brought the girls in the house because of the cold. I have a silkie terrier who is smart, very smart. I thought it was going to be madness. Suprise, I out smarted him. I put the box up high close to a window. Then I put my chicken scented clothes so the dog could see and smell them slightly above his head on each side of the box. I put my chicken shoes there on the floor. The dog thought the smell was my clothes and the sound was coming from outside.
He might be real smart but he is not a hound dog.
We also decided not to talk about it at all. The dog understands English.
Yep, this time I out smarted the dog!
And, yea, I'm happy to have the chicks back out. I hated having them in the house! Just too yucky!!!

I set eggs in the incubator today. So hopefully in about 22 days I"ll have fluffy butts. Assuming I don't hit the feed store sooner than that

Sheesh! All those Chix! I just picked up Eight Buff Orpingtons. They seem to be doing well, now on their Second Day (or maybe Third?) Day of Life.

Six have Variety in their Colors, Ranging from a Yellow Ivory to a nearly Tan on each Chick. Two are visibly Lighter in color, just Lightly Yellow - All over same color. Same Breed?

Seems like they are active for Five Minutes, then get sleeeeeepy and fall over or squat. Then they sleep for Five to Ten Minutes, get up and get a Drink of Water and do it all over again.

I set the heat lamp so it was 99.5 Deg F at floor level in the Brooder, but the Chix acted like it was cold, so I kept lowering the Lamp. Finally decided to test the temp at Chick level, and it was over 110!!! No signs from Chix that it was Warmer than Enough - they were still clumping up just from center under the lamp?!? Decided to follow the advice, and readjusted the Lamp to measured 99.5 Degrees at the Top of the Pine Shavings. No Difference in how the Chix acted - they all gather in a clump, in a Corner.

Wife is already asking what She can feed Extra?

Change Bedding every Three Days OK? Eight Chix in a Plastic Tub approx Three Feet By Two Feet.

My chicks arrived this morning! All is well they are eating and drinking really well.! We added 28! So we are up to 50 gals!

I was so worried after reading some of this thread a few weeks back...I've never ordered chicks before so I was afraid we'd have trouble.

Hope all of you get your chicks soon and those who have theirs enjoy!

My Ideal order shipped out today, but I have to wait for my Mt Healthy order to ship out Sunday. They had a low hatch today, at least they called and updated me so I wasn't wondering where my chicks were. Hopefully by tomorrow I'll have some of my chicks. Waiting is the hardest part!

I am sensing a slight addiction to chicks here! LOL! There will come a time during the dark days of winter when we will dream of fluffy little balls of delight! That dream will turn into an itch, then a peek at a web site, then a full blown order form and happy dancing in anticipation of the arrival. I have it real bad!!!

My littlest babes are 1 week old today. I added 1 Welsummer and 2 Ameracaunas to my bunch. The local feed store just got the first batch last week. (sigh) I just love hearing them peep away. Spring is almost here! Congratulations everyone on your delightful additions and little fluffy balls of joy! Next year I am thinking ducks or turkeys...
