who has guinea fowl

The easiest way to sex a guinea is by voice but you have to wait until they start "singing". I have 5 guinea cocks and they don't bother my roosters. This time of year, they are too busy chasing each other around.

I absolutely love my guineas. My only complaint is that they are fairly stupid. We have 300 acres for them to run around on and they make a bee line for the road every morning. I cannot understand it. I spend about three hours every morning watching and chasing them back the other way. They usually settle down in the pasture when the sun comes out and they get tired of chasing eachother around in circles. I have already lost three to cars this year. I may not have any more once these are all gone.

Hey all!!

Any of you ever heard of the guineas eating fire ants???

Do they eat the plants in the garden like the chickens??

We want some (for ants), and want to free range them, but can't have them eating the garden!!

So, they are loud huh?? If that one guy hears them from a neighbor 2 mi away, I'd assume LOUD!!

I dont know about fire ants, but ticks, grasshoppers, beatles etc seem to be on thier menus, We dont have fire ants but I would think they would eat them too.

They dont seem to eat the plants, or dig as much as the chickens.

Yes they are loud.

I have offered my guineas a handsome cash bonus plus central air conditioning in their coop if they would only eat up all our fire ants. So far they're still sleeping au naturel...

My male chased the chickens and pulled tail feathers the females have not done that. I had three guineas in a coop with 12 chickens. My favorite, the male, passed away and the birds are all getting along much better. When they can be outside and run around they get along much better, but being cooped up in the winter got a little boring for them. They can be hand raised and do get very friendly. They love mirrors-if you have a new shiny car or clean windows by your deck look out.

They are loud, can get carried off by hawks, but their alarm qualities are wonderful if you have open space and aren't too close to neighbors. Males are not as noisy as females.

Yes, Guinea meat is a delicacy, personally I prefere Guinea meat over Pheasant meat.

I have raised and eaten bought.

My mother advised me just to sprinkle regular baking soda over the fire ant hill, and.... it worked. I would not claim they died, but they surely were gone. This should be done when there is no rain in sight for a few days, and of course, do not water over the soda. This is in Central Florida.
