Who has or will be raising the price of their eggs this year?

wow...my WM rarely has eggs 99c...now I know we stock up at walgreens when hubby tells me they are on sale for 99c

but mayube I should go to save a lot lol...tl my eggs start up in oh..I dunno 5 fippin' months!

The average going rate on yard eggs in my area is $3.00 a dozen.
I would use this to figure what I can charge should I decide to sell the extra fresh eggs.

cage free to mass egg producers is chickens aren't in the small battery cages that they cram 3 or 4 chickens in and let them feed from a conveyor. I have a 10x12 run and a large coop, but I still consider mine cage free, they are confined to the run and coop for their safety due to coyotes, stray cats, and my own german shepard x lab mix that likes to tackle them and freak them out.

I call mine cage free and explain it this way. also if someone questions why I charge what I do I explain that my chickens lay eggs when they want to and where they want to. they get yummy treats from the kitchen and yard. the money I get from each dozen goes right back to the girls. once people see the passion and enthusiasm i have for my girls, that usually wins them over. also you can point out that the eggs that you buy for 99c at the store are from caged up chickens that don't ever see the outdoors or peck at the ground or even have a nest. that too comes as a surprise to some people, when they start the think about the conditions eggs like that are laid in.

also wanted to add, that if you have 30 hens, you can expect at least 18 to 25 eggs per day. that is a bit more than 9 dozen a week

I have 27 hens and was getting about 15-18 eggs a day. I probably have about 5 of them that are still too young to lay. Just because you have 30 hens doesn't mean you will get 30 eggs a day. I have 5 leghorns which is one of the best breeds for laying and some days I will have only a couple eggs from them and sometimes none. I feed them a high quality feed that I mix myself and nothing is lacking. What I am trying to say is chickens aren't predictable when it comes to laying. You have to figure in moult times and less daylight in winter too. Right now I am only getting about 6-8 eggs a day!!!

I honestly think they would be considered cage free. In my mind cage means the little enclosures they are put in with no room to stand or stretch their wings!! Having them in a run doesn't classify them as being in a cage. They still get to roam around and forage.

I have had to lower my prices

Was TRYING to sell them at $2.00 a dozen, but I went back to $1.50 a dozen.

Feed prices haven't went up THAT much so I am not that worried. I can get a 50lb bag of layer crumbles for about $7 and a 50lb bag of scratch grains for around $6 so it isn't too bad.

Wish our feed prices were that good here in Bama. We are like 11-13 for 50lb layer pellets. You oughta get a truck and make money coming here with some,LOL. Good for you...

It is going to be a year or more before I am able to even think of selling eggs. In my area most sell for $2 a dozen or they are taken to the local auction and sold for any where from $1.30 to $2.50 a doz. The price of feed here is around $10 a 50# bag for pellet and for scratch.
For now we eat all the eggs that we get and that is not to many with only 3 of my 6 laying, but three are still not even a week in the place.

Purina is $14 a 50# and even scratch (junk scratch) is $12 a 50#

I can beat that with sales, buying other brands, coupons and the like. But we are absolutely paying way, way more than you. I've watched it go up $3 a 50 since last fall. With corn/grain prices skyrocketing, it's not done. The squeeze is on for $1.50-$2.00 sellers.
