cage free to mass egg producers is chickens aren't in the small battery cages that they cram 3 or 4 chickens in and let them feed from a conveyor. I have a 10x12 run and a large coop, but I still consider mine cage free, they are confined to the run and coop for their safety due to coyotes, stray cats, and my own german shepard x lab mix that likes to tackle them and freak them out.
I call mine cage free and explain it this way. also if someone questions why I charge what I do I explain that my chickens lay eggs when they want to and where they want to. they get yummy treats from the kitchen and yard. the money I get from each dozen goes right back to the girls. once people see the passion and enthusiasm i have for my girls, that usually wins them over. also you can point out that the eggs that you buy for 99c at the store are from caged up chickens that don't ever see the outdoors or peck at the ground or even have a nest. that too comes as a surprise to some people, when they start the think about the conditions eggs like that are laid in.
also wanted to add, that if you have 30 hens, you can expect at least 18 to 25 eggs per day. that is a bit more than 9 dozen a week
