I've got a 3 year old rooster. Most of the time, when they get so old either a predator gets them or they eat something free ranging that they shouldn't or did I mention a predator gets them?

I have a couple of Australorps that are at least 8 yrs old...maybe 9. They still lay eggs and I have some pullets running around out there from them.

Bantymum had a 17 year old hen that passed away this past summer. The hen still laid an occassional egg.

I didn't know that a chicken could be that old.

  6. Hi! I had 12- and 11 year-old Barred Rock hens that both passed this summer.
There was nothing dramatic except my old turkey announced their passing and guarded their bodies til I found them.

My grandfather had the same chickens for 6-7 years before he 'restocked'. 17 years is CRAZY!! I had a dog that lived to 19 years and passed away on my son's 1st birthday.
