Honestly... I LOVE raccoons. I even raised an orphaned one. Yes, I read that Wild Life thread. This was a real orphan. It was found on the back of a porch in another city. A friend of ours (who has raised many of them, and also has chickens), let us know and let us take it. It was a great experience and very fun! Yea eventually she grew up, and she left on her own. I had to wear gloves because her claws were so sharp. We have coons here that live in our catch basins on each end of our property. If a coon were to get a chicken, I would mourn, but the coon got a meal and was only trying to live its life. If it killed all but a couple, then I might get angry.

Ya'll remember "The Circle of Life"? Accept it and embrace it. I know that sounds harsh, but if one animal dies because of another, IMO, that's not something to get upset over unless it's a continous problem or if the animal is a major pest in your area. If it dies from a vehicle or a machine... that's different... These animals were here way before us and we should respect them. Not saying we shouldn't kill them as overpopulation can be a problem too and we always want to protect our children, wives, husbands, etc.

I know what you're thinking - that i'll change my mind once it happens. Trust me, I've had many animals die due to inexperience, mostly because I was younger. I mourned and I missed them, but I got over it. I know i'm not doing squat trying to change your opinions as you probably have your minds set in stone. This is what I feel and will continue to do so.

You either love them or hate them.

I got a love and hate relationship with them! Yes I have nursemaid four little cute buggers when my Dad killed the momma a few days prior and the babies were hungry. We didnt know that at the time. So I had the for the weekend when the wild life office was closed. So I fed them goat milk and greedy little buggers! Glad they came and picked them up! They had their eyes open but wobbly gaited from being stuck in a tree the whole time they were waiting for momma to come home and never did.

And yes Dad and I killed a few coons, raiding the cat food metal cans and killing my chickens.

So its a love and hate relationship!

I think they are adorable. But if i had a problem with one killing my pets, i'd trap it and kill it.

What on Earth were you reported for? I didn't see anything...

Love and hate them here. Had a total of 3 as pet, bought from a person with permits. One even was a Albino, first one I had took him everwhere with me,even to school on the last day. He was super tame.

Now I trap and kill many to protect my birds. Have ones as pets taught me how smart they are. Had one pull the wire from his cage, roll the end up like a person would.

About 6 years ago, just after getting my first chickens, I had one killed, by a raccoon I think, in the middle of the afternoon with me just feet away. I never saw or heard a thing. I was pretty angry at raccoons for a long time, and vowed it would never happen again. A few weeks later I saw a mother and 2 babies at my back door going after the cat food. I grabbed my pitchfork and lit out after them. Mom and one of the babies made it to the back fence, but one of the babies climbed a tree and stranded itself on a branch about 6 ft high. It would have been easy to stick it with the pitchfork, but it started crying. And it's sibling started crying, on the fence. Mom was growling and charging me. I couldn't do it. I backed off a few feet and let baby go to mom. I have never had a problem with the raccoons since. Every year for the next 5 years mom & skittish dad have showed up in my yard with 2-3 babies. I feed them when I see them. A couple years ago I got to watch them climb into my goldfish pond swim to the bottom and catch 5 very large catfish- then have a catfish feast in the yard. Kinda surreal watching this by flashlight. Had a few yard messes to clean up after that. Last year they came in the late morning, walked past the free ranging chickens and shared cherries with the hens, for about 2 hours. Boy I wish I had a camera last year. Haven't seen them this year, hoping they are OK. The cherries are almost ripe.

Imp-If they come back I might join them
