THese are pics I tried to zoom in on with this camera. I had to crop them just to get this.

I tried that and it barely zoomed in at all. The seagull looked like a tiny dot. :/ What am I doing wrong? I've been reading the manual.

That isn't a zoom lens, it won't zoom much at all.

Kassaundra, HELP! I can't figure out how to zoom in for a close-up with my new Nikon D3000 (18-55mm VR lens). I have to learn that before I can play with my new Macro/fisheye lens. I'm getting frustrated, it is so complicated! :/

I ended up getting rid of the Macro.
If you want to take real closeup pics, zoom all the way out , not in. I am also realizing now that the more you zoom out (or in???) (for me it's 150mm ), I need a tripod or something to lean against to make my hand still.

If this was a crop on a zoom, then it's too far for the camera to pick up. Zoom all the way out on something closer. Then use a tripod or something to steady your hands. Then you will have something nice to crop. The more you zoom, the stiller the camera has to be.

the 18-55 is not designed to zoom but as more of a wide angle type lens. For a zoom like you are wanting to do it would take 200 and above on that second number. You can however do some great macros w/ the 18-55 lens and even better if you buy the 20ish dollar macro ring lens set to add on to it.

Her VR lens helps ALOT w/ that. But yes a tripod does make focus much easier.

Can I ask why. I love macro photography and have the maco lens on my wish list, but make do right now w/ a macro lens filter on my regular lens, but if it isn't worth the upgrade???? I could spend my money on other camera wishes.

I have a fixed 105mm micro lens that I use. I have a 70-200 lens, and even setting it at 105mm, the pictures don't turn out half as nice as the micro lens allows me to get. I think that's largely due to the cheaper glass in my 70-200, though. Also, I 'believe' that the micro lens allows you to focus at a much closer range than a standard zoom lens.

BBBBBBBBBB....... now I'm getting confused! Macro? Micro? To zoom or not to zoom? Why does my Nikon Coolpix L105 take nicer pics than the Nikon D3000 (supposedly an upgrade)?
