I’m off to a crazy start. Type a bunch - forget and hit return and edit but seems I messed that up ! 😏
This is my 3rd keeper flock - one at a time over 21 years. The first Americuna all hens and oldest lived for 13 years. 2nd surprise silkies from daughter and family included building small coop and run from rabbit hutches and once straight run 6 reduced to 3 since 1 cockerel was ok - 4 was too many - lived for 8.5 years.
this time family project with same daughter was bantams I’d always wanted to get and helping convert part of a shed to coop. A 4x8 totally enclosed above below and all walls with 1/4 inch hardware cloth including a screen door with same. Exterior door then opens to 8x10 under roof, pavers and stone floor and 1/2 inch hardware cloth over frame and screen door. In progress is securing the old yard run for flyers and hawk protection by adding chicken wire roof above the 5-6 foot chain link, and hardware cloth outer perimeter and dig guard. They can’t go there yet.
This straight run gave me 10 pullets,4 cockerels who all tolerate each other well. I have Polish crested head honcho, mottled Cochin , silikie and a porcelain de’uccle cockerels. The girls are a frizzle Black Cochin, 2 Mille fluehr de’uccle, A silkie and both black and mottled Cochin. The what now post which will be my next involves how fast these 6 month olds went broody and the resulting doubling of flock.
I know I’m missing questions I so intelligently copy and pasted to make this easy.
I read a lot of byc articles with my second flock. Juggling work and grandkids day care with things I don’t think I posted before. This time, I’m hoping to have time to do so, maybe offer help with what I’ve seen and learned and right now - get advised on what the heck was I thinking and insight from kindred souls.
