Getting 7-8 eggs a day now out of our 30 young hens- all varying shades of brown, save for the white egg laid by our sole leghorn- but on a few occasions, I have found a small brown speckled egg amidst the solids.

I have Buff Orpingtons, Silver Wyandottes, Plymouth Partridge Rock, Barred Rock, White Giant, Buff Rock, Turkens (I have seen the turkens laying solid brown eggs, so am kind of ruling them out) & three, 14 week old Freedom Ranger hens (who I dont THINK are laying yet, but ya never know)- Any of these partial to speckles, or is this just an anomaly?

I also wondered about the speckles. I only have five that are old enough to lay and I only get the speckles occasionally. It's not dirt spots, it's "speckles",but they wash off. ?????
I'm pretty sure it's my buff brahma hen.

My RIR also occationally leave speckled eggs, It seems that it may be dried blood? not sure but they wash off with a sponge?

I haven't tried to scrub them off, just lightly washed off some poo...so Idont know if they wash off or not. So does nobody lays speckled eggs consistently?

My red sexlink that just died last week layed speckled eggs, every one, even her pullet eggs. We also have a black sexlink that lays speckled eggs with darker pigmentation around the flatter end, so they look almost decorated. And these don't wash off at all, they are definitely part of the eggshell.

I have one barred rock that lays really dark eggs... like a dark marans egg... and it has speckles. She's the only one that lays them like that, too. The other BRs look just like the RIRs.

I've been wondering what causes the speckles also. I have one hen that lays speckled eggs one day and then plain brown for a day or two and then speckled again. It's odd, but they're so pretty. I'd love having more of them. I wonder if you hatched only the speckled eggs if those chickens would lay speckled eggs even more often than the parents?

We have Buffs & Wyandotts (and Aracaunas, but I know their eggs are not speckled browns) and are also getting brown speckled eggs. They're so pretty! Also curious to know who is laying what...is there any way to figure it out?
