I don't have an incubator yet, but I do plan to get one come spring. I think it would be a ton of fun to hatch some chicks. Maybe some BYMs from my bantams. And my Orpingtons arrive in late September.

I BROKE!!! I candled the eggs!

I'm sorry to report that Gouda was no-good-a and was not fertilized. But every single other egg has veins and I saw some eyes!!!! I was trying to be extra gentle so I didn't investigate if I didn't see the black dot.

It's pretty magical watching an egg turn into a tiny life. You definitely need to do a hatch from your flock!

You might be able to find discount priced incubators on facebook market place right now since chick season is usually spring for most people. But I always liked getting my chicks in the fall so I can get my first eggs come spring and my chicks feathered out in warm weather which means less time inside my house.

It is super exciting to be an egg momma, not going to lie.

My neighbor has an incubator, and she's hatched out quite a few chicks and poults. They might be her babies, but I still get just as excited.

I'll get my Orpingtons in late September, and their hatch date is September 29th. So mid-March will have them at 24 weeks. My bantams will be 24 weeks in early January, but I expect them to mature a little later, from what I've read.

With our generally mild winters, most people get eggs all winter long here, so I'm hoping that as mine reach laying age, the season/days won't affect them too much. That way I can get an early jump as soon as it begins to warm up in spring.

Of course, these are my plans. My chickens might have something totally different in mind, lol.

I can only imagine! I've got experience with puppies and way more than I ever wanted with kittens. Even that is pretty darn cool when you can hear heartbeats with a stethoscope and see and feel movement.

But getting to actually candle eggs and witness growth is going to be amazing. Plus, I'm fascinated with the genetics of chickens, so getting to witness various crosses, and see the whole BBS aspect of my Orpingtons, and what the birds grow up to look like, is so exciting to think about.

Exactly. It's always fun when our cats or dogs have their litters but being able to candle an egg and watch life develop, later to hatch, is pretty amazing!
