Excuse the gross winter coop. This is Rando, named by my husband because he's "just some random guy that showed up". What's everyone's best guess as to what he's made up of?
I'm guessing Brahma and Orpington. He does have feathered feet that are hard to see in the photo, and he's pretty big and floofy.

If he does have Brahma in him that passed on the feather leg genes, it would have to be farther back than having a full Brahma parent. The F1 Brahma mixes I've had all had a modified pea comb, yours has a single comb.

Two single comb + feather legged breeds I can think of are Marans and Cochins. If he's big, puffy, and round, Cochin might be the one.

He has a dark beak and dark legs which probably came from the other breed he's mixed with.

Thanks for the info! I kind of hope he has Cochin. I really liked my Cochin girls. He is a very sweet guy as well, although I think he has a single poppy seed rattling around in there instead of a brain

I'm going to guess he's a heinz57. A mix of mixes. I agree with Tink that brahma is unlikely, especially in the firs generation or two back. Pea combs are dominant, so neither of his parents had two copies of the pea comb gene. Brahmas also have a prominant "beetle brow" which your guy doesn't have.

Popular breeds vary from region to region, so it's hard to say what breeds are most likely to be in your boy's mix. Orpingtons seem to be perennially popular, so that's not a bad guess. The past few years marans have been pretty popular, and that could account for the feathered legs. Brahma could be in there a few generations back, feathered legs being dominant they could be passed on for generations. Rhode Island Red are also perennially popular and could have contributed to his color (RIR are black tailed red, could be where the black tail comes from)

He's probably head over sickle feathers he landed in such a wonderful yard and now has his own ladies to be with so he is so mind blown it has turned into a poppy seed :love :gig

Does he maybe have a bit of a crest? Any extra toes? I would bet he’s part buff Orpington for sure. Maybe Marans, as he’s got pretty dark eyes like a Marans. Silkie could also be part of it, though it would have to be pretty far back. That would explain the dark legs and feathered feet though :)

I'm sure he's likely what you say, a mix of mixes. This is helping immensely though, because every time I look at him I try to speculate what the heck he's made of. I ordered an Orpington an Australorp to add to my flock this year, so I'll at least have one of those to compare some Qualities to. The tail being RIR makes a lot of sense, too. It's originally why I thought Brahma was in there, but I can definitely see that with the single comb. Thanks!

He's not crested and no extra toes, so if there's Silikie in there it would for sure be way back. Marans being in there makes me happy if that's the case. I'll have to take a better look at his eyes next time I'm out there. Thanks!

For sure lol. My neighbor brought him over one day because he showed up on his property and he didn't want his dog to get him. He was pretty docile I think because he was starving. he had a scab on his neck like he had had a wound there and he couldn't peck the ground. I got him fixed up and he went in with my girls like he belonged there. It was pretty funny though, since they had never had a rooster around, whenever he tried to do his rooster stuff with a hen, someone would girl power peck his head and "save" their friend from him. He was so confused.

To see what color egg genes he is carrying, I guess you'll have to test hatch!!! :wee

If you can track what color egg the chick came from and then what color the offspring lays, then you can get an idea if he has any extra dark egg genes that may point to Marans :celebrate
