Who is with me?

Well, I checked things out. I had one baby that was still gooey. I also found four shrink wrapped chickies that I don't think even made it to hatch day. They were gone, no movement, nothing...they looked like little mummies.

I did get a good scare though. I pulled one of the eggs out and it started yelling at me! I found three more eggs that were pipped on the side, but the other chicks had rolled them over and they were pipped side down. I had no clue. One chick does have some thick blood type substance around his hole. What causes this and what does it mean? Should I do anything?

There are a total of three more pipped eggs in there. 2 have a good sized hole and one is just beginning...

Oh my word, it smelled like a bad bait store in there!!!

The bloody pip is just the chick making a mistake and doing it too early or just hitting a blood vessel, should be fine, most of mine that do that hatch.

See you have LOTS more going on than you knew.

But "peeking" gives you a LOT more information doesn't it? When you find a good number wrapped up, you know you're going to have to watch the rest of the hatch carefully.

Sorry about the early ones that expired, that happens

sometimes you never know exactly why.

Luck with the rest!

Me I'm in and out cleaning the new ancient incubator, it's on the porch. It looks like it might just Work as is...

I'm gflad everything has worked out well for you first 3 babies. I was around all weekend and not busy because I'm a Canadian, I forgot about the 4th of July. I think I posted in this topic near the begining, and I subscribed so thats how I knew you were worried and nobody was responding. I hope the rest of your hatch goes well.

riqui, how is it going? The shrink wrapped eggs WWD did a good job at telling you what to do. My advice is: If you do try to help one in need, do one part of the process and wait about 4 to 6 hours and wet again. Do not wet to often and do not try pulling the chick out to soon.

I open the air sac end, find the beak, open that membrane, wet the sac (with very hot tap water) and put baby back. About 6 hours later, I wet the sac again.

The next morning, (if baby is not out) when there are signs of no veining, I roll the membrane down from the body, wet baby and put it back in the incubator. About 6 hours later, I wet around the edge of the shell area, where the membrane may stick to the baby and then put baby back.

If baby is still not out of the egg, the next morning, I wet baby and gently pull the babies wing free. Then I put the baby back. About 6 hours later, if baby is still not free, I wet baby again and gently pull the head free and from there baby is on its own.

CB well my timing depends a little on how late the little bugger already is but you do it just about the way I do, I tend toward 4-6 hours depending on how strong or weak the chick is.

What makes me sure it's the right thing is when that little bird that maybe can't even make a sound when you start, gets stronger and stronger as you work with it and finally fights it's way free.

That is the truth.

As for shrink wrapped chicks. If I know they are shrink wrapped, which I can usually tell by the air sac, I mark them and if they are not making any noise come due date, that egg is opened.

I have lost a few and once a whole batch from shrink wrapping, so I learned the hard way.

Gotta run for hay, will check back with you as soon as possible.

I just put in 4 mixed eggs... but once my banty lays one today i will stick it in there too...
I just had a big flop too... out of 20 eggs none hatched, i hate temp. spikes!!!!
so i am going to try a smaller amount of eggs this time. the most i will put in there today is 6 im at 4 and waiting on my silkie and porcelain d'uclle bantam to lay.

Well, I have not figured out what is going on with my eggs, I think some are just wanting out sooner than they are supposed to be.

My last 3 hatches that were due onthe 3rd, 4th and 5th went like this:

The ones due on the 4th started hatching on the 1st and finished on the 4th.

The ones due to hatch on the 3rd started hatching on the 2nd and finished hatching on the 5th.

The ones due onthe 5th started hatching on the 3rd and finished on the 6th.

I cleaned out the incubator and scrubbed it down and put in the eggs that are due on the 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th. Well, I already have 2 dated the 9th hatching and it is only the 6th.

Just comes to show me that all eggs do not take 21 days and these are not banties either.

As for my temp, due to having peafowl eggs in the incubator, it sits between 99.5 and 100 and I keep it there.
