Who is with me?

Guineas need to be penned or temporarily fenced into the coop they are placed in so they stay IN there for a few weeks before you set them free or they're permanently free range birds and roost it trees. I just plan on continuing to add to the group if they get low in numbers - I want them out there eating ticks til the cows come home on all nine acres - ugh...

For good ducks - Runner Ducks rock. They're friendly and healthy and do really well in mixed flocks. Swedish Blues are adorable. Call ducks are hard to hatch.

You need a turkey or two... a heritage breed, something like a nice Bourbon RED...

And the incubator was sort of an accident. I mean, who KNEW I'd find one in my area, ever? At that price?

Never mind that I went from the LG, to a homemade metal cooler bator, to a mini-fridge one and then add a wine-cooler hatcher? Dunno what I'll do with those now... hmm still probably could use a hatcher... just in case....

Bwahahahaa...

And I lost one of my precious blue rocks from Halo so I have to reorder eggs from her... and... only one of the Bourbon Red/Buffs hatched so I'll need more. Fine I can figure out what to do with a 600 egg bator...

Chickie_mama - Have you considered Ebay? Do you use that at all? I got off of the phone with the person that has the keets locally and they are about a month old. I really didn't want them "that old." I read your post and realized that you were right...it would be much better to hatch them myself. Onto Ebay I jumped. There is a seller that I would trust once. The seller's name is paintworx and they are currently offering 12+ eggs, guaranteed to be fertile and the shipping is free.

If you decide to check out her listing,
http://cgi.ebay.com/GUINEA-FOWL-EGG...trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1205|293:1|294:50

do me a favor and let me know what you think? She is only listing as having 2 sets of these eggs left, so don't go buying them both on me!! lol

AAAHHH!! I just bought a set of those guinea eggs!! I really need to get away from this computer! My husband is going to die when he gets home!! I will wait to tell him when he falls asleep in the recliner and I have to wake him up to move his behind into bed and then, when all of the eggs come next week, I'll be able to say "But, I told you all about this! You didn't say anything then!!"

WWD, that part about guineas needing to be contained for 4-6 weeks, I did read in my research. I don't think that should be a problem for us. We are currently in the process of turning a shed into a coop and will be able to set an area aside, temporarily, just for that purpose.

I will be able to house them with the other chickens, right? lol I worry about that the most. I always look for that kind of stuff when I am looking at fish for our pond, so it is an automatic thought. Besides, having to build more coops will just make the "sell" to the husband harder. Too late, when it comes to the guineas though! lol

You know, I looked at Runner Ducks, at first, but I didn't know anything about them! They make good pets, huh?

We had thought about a turkey...but that was for meat. I never really thought of them as pets before. Just one more bird to consider...

And, actually, I have to admit that I am not "happy" with my incubator and I am just starting at this. I would like something that makes the eggs more visible, to begin with! I won't be able to sell that purchase though, so I will just make due with what I have and use it to enlarge the Wild Kingdom.

Okay, how do you do this staggered hatch thing if you only have one incubator? My guinea eggs will probably be here on Monday. This will have my guinea eggs hatching 5 days after my silkies. If I am not supposed to be opening the incubator during the last three days of the silkies incubation period, how do I roll the guinea eggs? Is this possible to do properly? Will I just have to reach in and roll the guineas as quickly as possible, hoping that it doesn't affect the silkies too much? Did I get myself into a no-win situation here?

And my 14 year-old saw the picture of your turkey, WWD, and has now asked me 3x if we can hatch a turkey!!

What I do is, (I am not going to say with staggered hatches, because all of the hatches I have done are staggered) I put the hatching eggs at the back of the incubator and the ones needing to be rolled at the front and has you said, lift the lid and roll in one direction, so make sure you have them lined up to roll, but only roll a little not all the way to the other side. Then when you roll them again roll them to the side and vise versa. DO SO QUICKLY and close the incubator.

You will be fine, it is not as hard as you think.

As for ducks, if they lay again, I have Swedish and Swedish Runner cross. I also have a bunch of mixed babies from my Rouen male and my 3 adult females (1 Rouen, 1 Cayuga and 1 Runner Cross). I charge only for shipping which the cost depends on where you live and you pay COD when you receive your eggs.

I cannot offer any right now, but my sitters are starting to hatch their eggs so I should have little ones running the yard soon.

I just adore my baby ducks.

Upon sending eggs, I can throw in a dozen or 2 chicken eggs. You will get some calicos, blacks, cream, just an array of colors.

NOT ENABLING.

Chickiemama, let me know if you want a couple peafowl eggs, they seem like they may be laying again.

LOL asking one of US if we want _____ eggs is like asking a crack addict if he'd like some free crack...

Chuckle.

I think the maran's hatch was killed in the temp spike, there's no sign of life there now.

Some of the silkie/sizzle eggs are making it, seven of them are still good. So I may get a hatch yet.

Yes, one good turkey picture can form a lifelong addiction. That particular hen turkey is a daily feature in my lap or in my arms. Well, several of the group are dedicated lap turkeys. And I

them back. I'll have BR/Buff and BR eggs in spring.
