all good last night and another skunk down, at least one more that ive seen still on the loose . Im not done yet

That is awesome....you're turning into a trapping machine. Catch them the first time, don't let them get away and be educated about traps, and you'll never have problems.


...well unless a critter that's been trapped somewhere else finds their way into your territory. We'll cross that bridge if need be.

But for now....Great news...you are doing awesome....

update, 2 skunks down . one head shot , didn't spray but definitely let it out after it was dead, polluted the whole yard. the one that I caught in a live trap I took a large tote big enough to submerge entire trap filled it up with water and dropped it in. No spray, but again it definitely released after death , stinky water for sure. The good thing was the water diluted the smell and when I poured it out the trap and the tote rinsed outeasily. buried the skunk and my yard doesn't smell at all. I would call the drowning method a success. also fyi skunks don't hold their breath. all the bubbles came up right away , over very quickly.

What's to stop the skunk from getting scared when you approach to pick up the trap and spraying you?

Appraoch him from the side or quartering from the rear. Lower your profile as you approach, no sudden noises or movements. Open the blanket only when you cover the trap.

I used a beach towel, moved real slow and quiet. towel hanging between me and him and then slowly lower it onto the trap then grab the handle through the towel. slowly pick it up and the only sudden movement is when I drop the trap into the water. they seem pretty calm with the trap covered.

I wish I could catch my 2nd raccoon I know is over there hiding. My first trap was my sister-in-law's old one that had a good patina on it. She took that one to Atlanta and didn't bring it back so I bought a new one that is all shiny. I don't know if it's that or maybe Daddy saw Mama get caught the first go round and now he's staying clear or whether he's just smarter than her and knows not to mess with it. I used gloves the whole time handling it from the time I took it out of the box, but maybe it's just too new and shiny for him.

You might look into getting a dp (dog proof) leg hold trap. Anchor it well and toss in some bait such as marshmallows,sardines,a cottonball with fish oil on it etc. The raccoons reach in and get caught but you don't get any dogs caught incidentally like with traditional leg holds. I would set a couple of them around your coop. If it's wise to your live trap this should work. Cost should be in the $12-$15 range per trap.
