In the Brooder
I would first like to thank everyone on this forum - you have supplied us with a wealth of knowledge and have made our first 5.5 months of urban chicken life so much fun!
I have a 2 part question: We purchased an Ameraucana, Barred Rock, Black Star and Giant Cochin as hatchlings in early March. In June we purchased a Golden Laced and Silver Laced Wyandotte and 2 Guinea Keets.
I'm pretty sure our eggs are coming from the Barred Rock and Black Star - as we have visibly seen each in a nesting box, but have never actually caught either laying. Both of these girls also do the "laying squat" when they are petted on the back. All the eggs found have been brown but they vary in size.
This morning I found a tan egg that is much smaller than anything else I've found. We must have a 3rd layer, as I found two eggs yesterday that look almost identical in size and color (and I'm guessing one bird isn't laying 2 eggs in the same box, but 2 birds are sharing one) The weird part is that this egg was not in a nesting box - it was on the coop floor and looked to have been laid while the bird was on the roost. Luckily this one didn't break - we have a roost laid egg about a week ago that was a mess! I'm ruling out the Cochin for the roost lays only because she is too big to get up to the highest perch and she tends to stay on the left side of the coop.
My husband and I work 10-12 hour shifts and we can't seem to figure out who is laying what. Is it possible that our Ameraucana is laying brown eggs?
Is anyone able to tell me what species of bird this egg came from or maybe how I can tell who is laying and who is not?
I didn't think the Wyandottes were mature enough to be laying yet and I don't know what a Guinea egg looks like - Google isn't much of a help sorting eggs by size!
