Who Lays the Best Eggs: Frequency, size, color. ?

we have several Rhode Island Reds who are all consistent good layers. We have one Black Maran and she has been the most reliable layer of all. The day we bought her and moved her across town she layed for us! And the eggs are a dark brown chocolate color!

Hi,
I am organizing chicken breeds, doing pretty good but......
aaahhhaaaa, as of right now what I want has put me over my limit, aahhhaaaaaa

This is how it alllll starts, isn't it

Thanks.

I have Leghorns that lay everyday. I have two white and two brown Leghorns. The white Leghorns lay larger eggs the two browns tend to lay smaller eggs. All of them lay white eggs.

You can't beat Leghorns for white eggs. Easter Eggers are good layers and are great for color variety. If I had to pick one single breed of chicken as far as egg production and sheer size of the egg, I would go with red sex links hands down, particularly the Cinnamon Queen variety. You can get these from Cackle Hatchery. I ordered chicks from them this Spring and they misread my order and put in the CQ's in among the birds I actually ordered. Best mistake ever. They let me keep them for free. They each lay almost every day, rarely take a day off, and the size of these eggs are huge. My leghorns lay at the same rate but their average egg weight is 2.3 ounces. Average CQ egg weight is consistently 2.5 ounces, and more than once I have gotten an egg over 3 ounces. Your average large storebought egg will weigh 2 ounces.

So you have about 20 chickens and do you get enough
eggs to sell 5 dozen a week ?

something like that ?

Thanks.

Yes, I have 23 hens. 20 are laying, and right now entering the winter months I consistently get about a dozen a day. Come springtime it will be closer to a dozen and a half a day. The list of birds in my signature is up to date, and I have 4 roosters: the brahma, a cochin, and 2 of the Easter Eggers. Right now I do sell about 5 dozen a week.
