Who likes guineas?

Our guineas live with and free range with the chickens they get along pretty good
The guineas normally roost in the run
Our rooster is about twice the size of the male guinea
He will peck at the male but not the female guinea to chase him off once in a while when eating
He just runs off they have never had a real squabble and once saw him roost on one side of our rooster and her on the other
During breeding season she started hanging around the rooster and sleeping next to him
It made me wonder if we were going to get a cross breed but unfortunately her nest got attacked (she made it out ok)
We only have a pair of guineas witch could be why we have no problems between them and the chickens
Once we build up the guinea flock we may have to move them to there own coop
But I really like the guineas they do help keep everybody safe
here is a link that has some different guineas http://raising-guineas.com/choosing-a-guineafowl-breed-best-breeds-for-backyards/

I would be real careful about that site you posted....I think it is less than knowledgeable. The first sentence is this:

"There are many different types of guinea fowl available to backyard poultry enthusiasts. Unlike chickens, which can be classified into different chicken breeds, guineas are separated by guinea species."

That is blatantly false, in error, and wrong...Did I cover it?

A species is a group of animals that cannot crossbreed successfully and have the resulting offspring be capable of breeding.

All Guineas can cross breed with each other, there for they are not different species. They are varieties, eg. different colors. They are not even different breeds, which is a sub division a little less that a species and a little more than a variety. Breeds when bred to each other breed true. Guineas do not even breed true 100% of the time. At least mine did not.

More proof today, You cannot believe everything you read on the internet...Now I have to run, I have a Nigerian Prince sending me 30 Millions dollars for helping him get money out of Africa! My Lucky day is Here!!!

Hello and welcome to BYC!! It’s so nice to have you join us. welcome.gif
I have guineas. I really like them. But they are a handful...lol.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of us. :)

Does anyone happen to know how many classified colors of guineas there is since there is only one breed
The APA only recognizes three varieties which are Lavender, Pearl and White. There are many more color varieties available. You can see many of the color varieties on this Guinea Fowl Color Chart.
The Vulturine Guineas are a different breed but are not recognized by the APA.

Species is a genetic classification as in ....genus/species. Breed and varieties are not genetic classifications.

There are four different genuses of guinea fowl.

Agelastes which has two different species

Numida which is the common Helmeted guinea fowl

Guttera which has two different species

Acrylium which is the Vulturine guinea fowl

I did not realize there was a different Species other than helmeted in the USA. I went to the Minnesota DNR and Helmeted is the only one we are allowed here, any other would be considered an invasive species so we cannot have them.

Birds

  • chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar)
  • helmeted Guinea fowl (Numida meleagris)
  • house sparrow (Passer domesticus domesticus)
  • Hungarian partridge, gray partridge (Perdix perdix)
  • peafowl (Pavo cristatus)
  • pigeon or rock dove (Columba livia)
  • ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus)
  • starling (Sturnus vulgaris vulgaris)

Anything not on the list is considered invasive.....in this severely Liberal state!
