First time I've seen this...two hens sitting in the same box. Now I know alot of you have had this happen, but my hens will literally form a line in the coop to sit in this particular nest box and squawk and cackle, 'til it's her turn. Today it just struck me as funny.

And this is what they were sitting on....

That was a first for me!! Knowing each of those hens personalities, I couldn't believe they tolerated eachother enough to do it!!

I have three hens that take their turns at the bucket on my porch. They don't like the coop, I guess. The lucky one takes her time while the other ones pace the floor bok-bokking. Now I can find two at a time in there. I wonder if they'll squeeze in three at a time next. But they are sisters that get along well enough. Good thing yours aren't pecking at each other for the best box!

Yes silkies will "bock". Mine also fight over a nest. I usually have at least 2 hatch a nest of eggs and they will both raise the babies. I have 1 "pair" of hens that do this all the time, but the white one is the "baby raiser" and in a weeks time the black one is up on a nest again!

I've almost given up trying to figure them out

I haven't figured that out either;;;;eight nests and mine only use two. One silky is brooding and the others will get in there with her. Fortunately I marked her egg (only one left after raccoons ate the other four and not even sure if this one will make it) so I wouldn't get confused....silkies are awesome brooders, layers, etc.

The part I don't understand is that there will be THE box for several weeks and for no reason that I can tell, the hens all change their minds and decide that a different box is now THE box --

this all kind of reminds me of that old thing about 'The Rules' for women -- (that we don't have to have a 'reason' to do what we do)
:)
