Who REALLY loves their chickens?!?!?!

I KNOW I love my chickens! Friends and family all think I'm nuts anyways, but now they know for sure..... Yesterday I got in the car and was leaving to go to work. My chickens all free-range the property and, as much as they're scolded, one will sometimes wander onto our country road. (And the occasional passing vehicle never seems to notice my brightly-displayed "chicken crossing" sign!) I start to pull out of the driveway when I noticed one of the girls had wandered into the road. I quickly scanned both ends of the road and saw that there were two pickups coming from the left, and a logging truck on the right. My immediate reaction (which probably wasn't a very bright one, I admit) was to dash down the driveway and block the road with the car, waving at them to stop. I approached my girl and she bowed down to be picked up. (I swear, I know these drivers thought I was some crazy person-I tried not to look their way!) So here I am, chicken under my left arm, get back into the car with said chicken on my lap, looking up over the steering wheel at the scenery-she fully enjoyed the brief car ride. She was lectured about the dangers of the road and was promptly placed back with the rest of the flock who were busy eating breakfast. Do I love my chickens-YES!!!!!

I've always wanted chickens! Last January I finally got some (at 28 years old) after my dear, sweet, loving man built me a small coop for Christmas. I chose Buff Orpingtons b/c I live in a neighboorhood and needed a docile type that wouldn't want to wander or jump the chain link fence. They spent the first 4-5 weeks in the bathtub then transistioned to days outside and nights inside...I think the daily handling made a HUGE difference. I couldn't be happier with my decision! I raised a flock and kept 3 girls (adoped the rest out to happy homes) and they are absolutely beautiful and add a lot of joy to my life. They're very friendly, calm, and 3 weeks ago I started getting one egg every day, which is perfect!

They're my girls-my Golden Beauties, as I call them. The come running up to the fence when I pull into the driveway and they love to be handled. They talk and follow me around the yard and spend the day eating bugs while I'm at work. Training them to lay in their small coop and to put themselves away at night was easy-it was a natural thing for them to do, it seems. They've made incredible pest control!! No more bugs in the yard! Anyone looking for natural bug control should think about chickens. I have no ticks, worms, grasshoppers, etc in my yard.

I cannot wait to live in a place where I can have more chickens and a big henhouse.

I truely LOVE my girls-they turned out to be even better pets than I ever imagined!

... Every person that comes around here says that my chickens act more like dogs than chickens... they will come right up to ya and talk to ya.... I have one Black Star, Rosie, that says "hello" .. everyone gets a kick out of her.. I think its because I have handled them so much and hand feed them everyday... Just today we had an awful storm with winds blowing and pouring the rain and I ran out to cover my babies up and here come my girls in the pouring rain to meet me... I think they know I love them.. If I never have another pet besides my chickens and a dog to protect them, I will be a happy camper...

Hi Judymae,
Chickens are such a blessing! About "showgirls"... you guys are right. They are a cross between a silkie and a turken (naked neck chicken). They have all the attributes of the silkies like black skin, 5 toes, silkie feathers, plus they have the naked neck of the turken! They are so unusual looking, but they have the same sweet disposition of the silkies and are very broody and good mamas. I have just recently gotten into the showgirls and I love them! I have a few other chickens that were my son's 4-H projects. I have 1 buff laced polish hen, 1 black rosecomb hen, 2 mille fleur belgian d'uccle hens, 1 quail belgian d'anvers hen, 1 mixed d'uccleXrosecomb hen, 6 silkie hens, and 5 beautiful white showgirls. I have also recently purchased an incubator and hatched 12 silkie chicks, 10 showgirl chicks!! I am so proud. I have pictures of the babies if you want to see them, I can email them to you. I have no idea how to put them on this site, I wish I did so I could share them with everyone, they are sooooo adorable !!

Lisa-I would love to see the pics. My email is [email protected]. I figured out how to post pics so you can. I went to photobucket.com and followed the directions. It did take me a little while but I'm not too good with computers. Ask my 7 year old! He laughs at Momma!

I'm so happy that it's not just me! I'm very new to owning chickens, and I just love them. I sit and watch them after I put my kids to bed. They're not tame enough yet to handle (they were already young adults when I adopted them) but they seem to enjoy listening to me talk to them. They come over to the fence to see me, then go about their chicken business. I love them!
