some of mine are. They at least have pretty decent memory when they want to. I feed them freeze dried meals worms as treats sometimes & unlike other treats-sunflower seed, dried cat food or whatever the mealworms are in a small black bag. When they see that bag they go nuts. A few of them in jump in the air to try to get at it.
Are your chickens smart?

I love that!
Mine know what a can of cat food looks like and they also recognize the white little tub that meal worms come in. I love watching them waddle/run over to the fence!

OMG !!! I get mine crickets & have to put the cricket bucket in a paper bag just to get out of my car...

We think our old roo, Whitey, has a big vocabulary. Whenever he sees me he will run over; I admire him and tell him how handsome he is. He will turn slowly in a circle, preen, and flap his wings. If I admire another rooster, (we have seven) he will make a loud disgusted noise, but he doesn't seem to mind me admiring the hens!. Recently, we were discussing our Hannah hen's necropsy while in the barn, and talking about the worst possible results (culling others in the flock), depending on the results. Again, he made that loud disgusted noise! I swear I think he can understand our conversations!

I think they are very smart! My babies come running when ever they see me. They seem to know when it's treat time, coop cleaning time and bed time. Lately I've been noticing my speckled sussex Roo, Yancy, has been helping me get the girls all in at bed time!!! They have smarts no doubt about it!!!

They can be smart! My girls know exactly where the cat food is kept in the kitchen. If they wander on in and the cat's bowl is empty, they walk over to the container that holds the feed and start pecking on it as if to say, "Open up. . . . NOW!" The EE knows her name. If you say her name while out in the yard, she'll "talk" to you.

Obelisk and Slifer know their names...and Penny is learning hers.
I come in the house with a paper bag from the Main Street and Obelisk is already on the table drooling...she can smell that sub from the driveway, I think she recognizes the bag.
She know the words "Millet Spray" and will go on the porch to eat it. She also knows to go to the porch when DH calls and says he's coming home.

How funny... My standard buff cochin knows her nickname. Her name is Kendra but we call her "Chicken Hawk" because she perches on your arm like a falcon (silly, I know). I can say "Kendra" all I want, but the second I say, "CHICKEN HAWK!", guess who comes running full speed!

I sooo agree! They are smart critters! Spot my roo knows my voice and if he hears me he talks to me and comes running. He doesn't respond to anybody else that way--might be because he knows they say "dumb bird".
