M y muscovy drakes can only get take off if up on the hill behind our home. So they get one wing clipped so I don't have to worry about something having them for a meal when they leave our property.

wouldnt that higher the risk of them getting eaten if they can fly away?

Hasn't been a problem yet and I have had muscovies for going on 8 years. I have 4 dogs that keep most preds away.

Female muscovies are excellent fliers, but they seldom if ever fly away. I've raised muscovies for years and all they've ever done is circle around and then come home. I love to watch them fly.

Most showbred muscovy drakes can hardly get off the ground. Ours certainly can't. Barnyard muscovies tend to be smaller than Standard-bred birds, and they can often fly. I absolutely love watching a male muscovy on the wing. They're fantastically majestic when they have a strong sustained flight.

If a female muscovy can't fly, chances are she's in lay. When the females come into lay, their abdomens get weighed down and that's that. I find that muscovies fly most on the autumn. When the young ones start up, the older one's join in.

If you hold a newly hatched muscovy, you'll notice that they feel like nothing but fluff. Compared to a mallard-derivative duckling, they have no substance. That was they just bounce like the wood ducks in the video. If you hold the same duckling three or four days after hatch, you'll be amazed at the weight gain. You're freinds ducklings will handle the jump masterfully.

Before our Muscovy drake came to live here he was a dumped duck down at the river below our house, he had 2 other drakes with him, they would fly above the river and it was a sight to see, He is now way to heavy to fly and probably wouldn't if he could since all the girls and food is here.

Just stopped by my friends house tonight and there were 15 little fuzzy babies under mama's wings hanging out 20 ft in the oak tree. She pulled down the babies and mama went back to sitting the nest (there were 8 eggs left to hatch). They are the cutest little babies! She has two of them sitting nest right now - she is going to be overrun by ducks in a month!!!!
