Who says you can't out fox's a fox!!

If I read the OP correctly, the fox was released on the property and not relocated. If so, was the fox given any reason to not come back?

The reason I ask is that somebody posted an article here last month that described an aversion conditioning technique for use on predators. The theory was that an undetectable sickness-producing agent in a dead chicken would program the predator's body to reject chicken as a food source. And then the predator would avoid chickens and teach others to do the same. (eg. coyote pack)

Has anybody actually tried this?

On that point I can see what you are saying. If I found a badger (Carriers of TB here and center of an issue with dairy cattle). I would take it to the RSPCA or a Badger rescue organisation to give it checks and find a suitable place for re location. I was expressing a faith in the posters knowledge and judgement.

We don't have rabies here, but if we did, it'd throw the same concerns my way also... I'm sure.

Chicken.Lytle ... I did't read it that way, but if I had, what of the scare of being caught ? ... Is there that little wild food for it ? I am coming to grips and "getting my head around this a bit"... In Urban areas we have foxs that are somewhat different to rural foxs. They carry Mange and other "Civilised plagues" and have worked out how to kill Hedgehogs.

A vet would either cure it or give it a lethal injection.

Everyone has the right to do what they feel is right. If your decision made you feel good I am happy for you and the fox. Hope it all works out

Yes thats why so many state had to make it illegal to relocate....so those doing what they feel like. Will have to pay for spreading disease or other problems with relocation.

I AM a treehugger.... but NOT a "Fluffy bunny". This whole cultural difference/outlook is of great interest/amazement to me. It has got to be due to the size of the USA and other large nations and the gun laws maybe ? Where I hear of snares (illegal here) and the "Yeeahh Haw ! Shoot it !" attitude of some I need to keep reminding myself of it.

I have hunted in a small way and have no issue with pest control on rats or even foxs, but what happened to "Living WITH nature" and seeing that we are within an eco system we are part of rather than master of.?

One fox is not the be all and end all. Human compassion isn't a bad thing in the right place. I for one commend 7L for the action. (Assuming the best rather tham worse with regard to the "skilled judgement" of someone who obviously has a realistic understanding of the wildlife and region they are dealing with.

I sometimes suspect some people would prefer no wildlife at all... to risky ... dirty things, them wild ones ....

Your right atleast in my mind. I sit on a 100 acres & would hate not to ever see any wildlife. Again, this was the first foxs I'd ever seen here. I like the majority here do not want to see my chickens murdered by anything .Everyday they come back to roost & I lock them up at nite I count them & thank the good lord above for their return. I tried to only let them out a few hours a day & supervised every outing but it wasn't enough & they started pecking each other to death.Chickens get bored so I now let them out & hope the roo will take care of them. Mr Freddy my roo does a good job but its hard to watch all the girls all the time. Will I ever loose one I'm hoping not to aren't we all. It takes a long time to get them laying & it can be taking away in seconds by a predator.

I expect losses to everything I try to plant or breed etc. For me it is part of a cycle. It's nice to try to control any arising issues due to predation or,with my vegetables, pests, but never try to expect perfect control. When I loose a chook to a Chicken hawk one day, I'll be happy the hawk is fed but put up beter protection.... There's an old saying that escapes me ATM.... something about a 3rd to crop a third to pest and a third to the Gods ...

I'll see if I can dig it up sometime.

Cock birds are there for a reason other than procreation. (imho)... If you want perfect egg production go for "Battery hens" (j/k and not being provokative please) BTW... IIRC those hens become ilegal here soon... I wonder what happens in other contries. Maybe I'll open a thread

If memory serves me snaring is legal in Scotland is Scotland part of the UK?
