Would like to start them directly out in the coop and anticipate eggs soon than which chicks. Looking for more docile sweet breeds, adult birds are fine also.

Thank you!

I got 3 started pullets from Murray McMurray this spring. They are supposed to be between 15 and 22 weeks old. One of them was laying 10 days after I got them. Very expensive way to get chickens. With shipping it cost somewhere around $50 to $60 a bird.

Craigslist is also a good place to look for adult birds.

All large hatcheries sell started pullets. But, availability is hard to find this year. You can go to a livestock auction, but can come away with good birds or sick or old birds. Some people label the birds at auctions, others do not. We’ve sold several healthy pullets at auction, and some hens. No issues, just we had others we preferred.

you can look for farm pages on fb that are near you - cannot sell animals on fb, but you might find a farm with available chickens. Going into winter, some people naturally thin their flocks, so you might find some good choices. Understand though, that whatever you buy (other than a known age young pullet from a hatchery) will likely molt this fall or winter.

Availability will depend on your location. I've seen birds advertised in Facebook groups, on Craigslist, and on breeder sites. Terms to look for would be "started pullets" or "laying hens". People have to be more cryptic to avoid the algorithm on Facebook, but you can usually tell.

If you happen to be in Missouri, I may be able to help you out.

We have gotten started pullets from Meyer but I think they're sold out this late in the season. Always worth a look, though. The leghorns we got are laying machines.

Edit: Just remembered you said sweet breeds. Nothing against leghorns but the australorps we got are sweeter and still pretty productive.
