Yes , I agree with PC. My birds do not go to "slaughter" although that is the correct term. I raise our birds with dignity, healthy enviroment, and when it comes time to do the dispatching, I go about it quietly, as quickly as possible, and I usually make sure I thank them for what their job in our lives was.
Sounds a bit sappy, but its what I do. Now I could not go out and dispatch one of my pet hens, but, when the time comes and I see the life fading, just like the birds that were killed and left by the hawk, I will burry them.

Of course I slaughter them, thats what a meatie is for. After living a very happy and fulfilled life in the coop, they are chosen on a very special day and are slaughtered.

They are slaughtered to offer not only my family with a bountiful dinner, but also my neighbors, and friends, and my wifes co-workers, and possibly the family that has been staying in the hospital lobby for the last 6-8 weeks while my wife cares for their critically injured loved one.

I don't take for granted that these animals, or these fuzzy butts to some, would make the ultimate sacrifice so that I may be able to fill my tummy, or someone else's tummy with a warm meal that needs the nourishment. I am thankful that they were there to provide me with laughs along the way, the education that they have given me, and the nourishment that they do provide our bodies so that we may be able to do more good in the world tomorrow, and next week.

I am thankful with every bite of their warm, succulent body, that they are able to provide us with all they have to provide us with. I am human, and I need to eat to remain on this earth and do good deeds for others. There will always be a need for someone to provide food for my family and others, so I am going to be the caretaker of these fuzzy butts to ensure that they have the best life possible while they are here so that you and I may enjoy the best quality food that may ever be set on our plates.

So yes, to answer your question, I slaughter. Every kill is hard, but very much appreciated. My chickens bring so much more good to this world, both alive and dead, than any chicken raised in the food factories by the almighty corporation looking to make fifty cents.

Over this next year, should my health co-operate, I will also be raising and slaughtering rabbits, pigs, and cows. These creatures provide not only the food and nourishment my body seeks, but also a form of friendship and a special bond that you don't get by going down the meat isle at wal-mart. They are appreciated and their lifes were lived for a cause.

Yes. I take responsibility for as much food that goes into my mouth, and my families mouth as possible. I raise my own garden, and in effect, kill and eat those plants as well. My plants and animals have the best lives possible, and therefore, my family has the best food possible. It's not easy, it's not pretty, but I feel very grateful for every bite we eat.
