I do slaughter my own chickens, but I am a vegitarian. I slaughter them for my family though.

Not to change the topic or anything, but has anyone gone troll fishing lately?

Yup, chickens, quail, ducks, rabbits, deer, fish etc. Do I love my chickens, not the ones I kill, I know they are meat right from the start and I don't let myself think any other way. Got two nice chicks in the brooder now, I know they are cockrels and as soon as I did know they became possible meat, unless I need another roo later on.

i taught myself because i wasn't about to pay 1.85 each without a bag. i really enjoy it. it's relaxing and makes me feel good to see the project through start to finish.

my children are learning an invaluable lesson. how, where and what's of food.

it's not for everyone, but it works for us.

We butcher our own chickens and turkeys. 50 birds in June but usually 25 in two weekends. Turkeys are usually done the first week in Nov.Myself, DH and the daughters. Sometimes the boyfriends as well.

my oldest girl (6) helped me process our snake,, hehe,, she says she wants to help with the birds next time

Yes, we butcher our extra roosters. We do it for the same reasons everyone else does - we know the animals were treated well, fed well, and given a good life.

I'll never be able to eat store-bought chicken again.

I love troll as well but I find it a little gamey and tough sometimes. How do you cook yours?

personally, i do that twirly thing first so their hair stands up in a dairy queen do and then boil. after the meat starts falling of the bone, throw it on the bbq and douse with sauce. oh, yeah, that's good eatin'.
