How much do you pay per bird?
It's expensive where I am- $3/bird. We process our own- but I don't know how people afford it.

Slaughter, butcher, cull, put down, process, whatever you want to call it, we do it. Chicken is a food item here. So far I've only culled problem birds or deformed chicks, but next year I may raise 25 or 50 meat birds for SLAUGHTER if that's the way you want to put it. I call it filling my freezer.

We will be slaughtering the extra roos and raising others later for more meat. Most of the hens will be for eggs but eventually will be stewing hens as well. Like many others have said, we're raising them humanely and giving them the best life we can, even if it's a short life. I've become very concerned over the way meat is raised in this country and we've come to the conclusion that doing it ourselves is the only way to know for sure that our food is safe. That includes a large garden and soon a small orchard. It doesn't replace all of the food we consume but it takes a big chunk of the questionable grocery items. We get beef from a local organic farmer and try to get a few deer this time of year.

Self-sufficiency is COOL!!! Not cruel.

Sorry, my daughter and I are vegetarians. My daughter posted the first one where she (I) said that I "would never slaughter my chickens etc". I didn't know she posted that so I posted that I did (which I do). My daughter doesn't approve of killing her "beloved" chickens so I try to be quiet about it. So I do she doesn't.
Cleared up?
