Well ... so far i haven't intentially butchered any chickens for meat purposes. Need to get a freezer for the garage first.
.
but we have pet (breeder) chickens, layer chickens, and this spring we'll have meat chickens as well. I'm contemplating a few of the extra roo's running around, but they haven't to this point been a problem, so I guess they're lucky.. if there's mass fights and the hens start to look really ragged, then a few will have to go. I'll look for homes first of course.
then there's the turkeys. I have three toms that I'm looking to butcher here really, really soon. I have to put a sign in my yard and see if I can sell the boogers as thanksgiving centerpieces. There is one hen, though, that has been given a full pardon ... mostly because she's just so sweet. She comes to visit everytime I'm outside working and simply sits by me the entire time I'm outside. If I squat down and snap towards here, she'll come over right up to me and loves to get her head rubbed. Simply cannot do it, so she has the current pardon. I've dressed out one turkey that killed itself jumping down from roosting in the barns rafters (big dummy) and gave another one to our 70 year old neighbors when it did the same thing. Still have mine in the freezer (the one in the kitchen and it's taking up way too much room. definately need another in the garage.)
So there are both sides ... we have the ones that have stolen our hearts (we give those one's names), the workers (layers, breeders, etc.), and soon the feeders.
