Who the Duck?!?

Making Friends

Howard and the new ducks on a supervised visit to the longer grass in the back field. They won't go there themselves because they have to go through chicken feeder territory to get there and Reuben the Rooster will attack them if they try. If they go with me Reuben threatens a bit but doesn't attack.

My daughter is constantly trying to sweet talk the younger ducks into letting her swim with them.

She is starting to make some headway.

Cocoa now waits till she is actually stepping into the water before bailing out the other side.

That is so cute next thing you know she will be swimming under water with them lol Very nice area for the ducks to have a bit of freedom, good thing your with them. looks like perfect Eagle/hawk territory.

We are planning on putting up some little shelters they can run under to avoid predators and get out of the sun. I have never actually seen a hawk near our place. There is a family of turkey vultures that nests near us and I think they keep them away.

Good idea on shelters, you never know what kind of preds you have 4 legged or flying till you get poultry. Then they come out of the wood work.

The last of the older ducklings has been named Henry. Because we think it is a boy and that is the boy name my DD picked.
Now we just need to name the two little ducklings....
Well them and about 20 chickens...

It appears that our man...well duck...Howard has a touch of the wanderlust.

He was accepted by my new ducks and spent about a week with them. Swimming, eating feed, grazing...even sleeping together...shocking I know.

Then one morning a few days ago between when Hubby opened the Duck Hut and served up their breakfast at 6:30 and when I went out to make sure no one was being bullied and to throw out some scratch and BOSS to the ducks and the chickens at about 10 Howard ran...or rather waddled...away....!

No wonder Mama Duck was trying to keep him away from her kids! She knew he was the wandering type and didn't want them getting attached just for him two take off unexpectedly.

Me and the duckies worried about him for a few days hoping he had just gone to visit his owners and wasn't lying in a ditch somewhere!

Then today sometime between when Hubby opened the Duck Hut and fed breakfast and when I went out to do a bullying check Howard came back!

I was thrilled and figured Mama Duck and the kids would be too but they are absolutely furious with him! They keep chasing him away and refused to allow him to go anywhere near them or the Duck Hut.
So the saga continues.

Will Howard be allowed back into the flock?

Will Tika end up being a boy?

Will Cocoa ever forgive the little red hen for pecking her or will she plot a distantly deed to get revenge.

Will Henry stay the biggest of the muscoveys and or will Tika need to be renamed and outgrow him and take over as head of the familia!

Tune in next time to find out!
