Who the Duck?!?

As I was giving my chicks their daily treat of stale bread a stranger waddled out of the ditch and into their midst. The picture doesn't show it well but he/she is a dark brown/black with a green and purple head and purple feathers on his/her back, black feet and a desperate hunger! I gave it water, bread and grower pellets and it doesnt seem like he/she plans on leaving anytime soon. There is a metal band on his/her right leg.

Medium size...i'd say around 6-8 pounds.

Do they fly? Because we are surrounded by crop fields...there are two house in site but I wouldn't except a duck to walk on it's own that far from home.

Yes they can fly. if it's banded its either wild or someones close by.

No, they don't fly, or at least very well. However, I wouldn't put it past them to walk a long way or swim down a river or stream. I'm betting he belongs to a farm, hence the metal band.

Sometimes, but not much. Are your chickens able to be seen by passerbyers? Someone could have dropped it off.......

Why can they not fly dd they look like they would be light enough to?

The one neighbour does have a pond but I have never heard ducks from their house before.
What do I do if it is still around tonight? I don't want something to eat it.
