Who the Duck?!?

They are actually pretty bulky underneath and their wings are too small to support them in flight. This one looks like Bigboi and Bigboi can jump up and fly a few feet, but not a long way, but he's exceptionally lean and may have some wild mallard him.

Maybe I'm wrong and someone else with Cayugas will correct me by saying that they have several that fly well.

By the way, if he's a boy, which he probably is, you might not hear anything because males are pretty quiet.

He seems starved. His back feathers are ratty looking and he has just ate, drank and rested then eats again since he got here. He ate a couple hot dog buns then over a cup of grower pellet.

If he's a boy, he will have a quiet, raspy quack. Usually, males have a tail curl, but if he's molting, it might be missing.

Do ducks normally wander alone or is there something wrong with this one. I can't remember if it made any noise when it first waddled out of the long grass. I was pretty excited and VERY surprised. I don't think it was very loud but it seems pretty weak.

Do you have a body of water close by your land? it may have just come down stream, one reason Ii don't let my Scovy's go to our Mt. River it runs pretty fast and I don't want them to end up down stream where someone else might see them as supper.

Only time will tell if it's sick or just starved, alot of people think domestics can make it on their own out in the wild but if they have been raised in a setting where they are use to being fed they don't always do so good. If you can get it to go into a pen you might be able to house it over night. and possibly someone did dump it and it finally found your place. Happens all the time.

Why can they not fly dd they look like they would be light enough to?
'Fraid not, they're just too heavy. I agree that this guy seems to be a bit lost, especially if he was as hungry as he was! Do you have plans to keep him or are you going to try and find the owner?

Bread is not a good diet so till he is back in shape I would offer bread.

No creeks or streams near us. I think the neighbour has a pond but it is fenced in. I will get my Hubby to drive over to the neighbour's and ask if they have ducks and if they do we will tell them one is at our place.
