I thought I'd add this permethrin dilution rate chart for the various permethrin concentrates made by a BYC member on this thread in case other members happen across issues with mites/lice. I realize that this thread really addresses stick tight fleas..

We call those "sand fleas" after doing some research, we have successfully treated the flock by putting a tiny drop of Fipronil on each bird. We were able to find a (Frontline) generic and got the packaging for extra large dogs. We gloved up one night and drew it up in a syringe, broke the needle to about 1/4" long and used that to put a drop behind the comb of each bird. This worked and it was late enough in the season that the problem was solved until the next spring. It gave almost instant relief and didn't seem to hurt any of the chickens. These fleas are on rabbits, birds other wild animals that keep the sandy soil around our place "planted" with new fleas so the process had to be repeated the next spring. We are now putting out lime that helps around the barnyard and sulfur in the dusting areas the chickens use that both seem to be working for now. Our chickens free range pretty far out into the pasture.

Interesting! I've read about using flea medication for dogs, but the riskiness worried me too much to ever try it. Assuming you eat your hen's eggs, do you wait out an egg withdrawal, and for how long?

My original post was 4 years ago, and thankfully, I've found success using just permethrin since then. I've had a major breakthrough in the past 2 months and might finally be (almost) rid of these fleas. I'm thinking I'll make an update post soon in this thread for anyone who finds it in the future.

I was having serious issues with northern fowl mites and went all out with permethrin spray but had no luck. It was over 4 weeks of trying to treat them and was frustrated. Needless to say someone suggested spinosad, I bought captain jacks dead bug brew concentrate and worked like a charm! This was the update to my thread I wrote in desperation for some help. I really think that these critters are resistant to permethrin and until I used the spinosad I hd

“I wanted to update this thread as I have successfully rid my chickens of the nasty northern fowl mite infestation I had. I sprayed 2 squirts (I got a spray bottle from tractor supply) of the 1(spinosad):4(water) dilution of the caption jacks dead bug brew concentrate under each wing, their neck, underbelly, above tail, and on the vent above and below. Shortly after I sprayed it there were no more mites! I was going to reapply a week later but there were none to be found so I didn’t bother! That was over a month ago. I am so thankful for the recommendation. Not only did the captain jack help my chickens but it helped me get rid of nasty Japanese beetles in my garden that were eating my eggplants and Bag worms on my shrub. That stuff is seriously a miracle fix all for bug issues! I’ve actually been able to enjoy my chickens finally, which is definitely worth the $30 it cost. Thank you again to everyone who helped me!”

I hope this helps some!
I have been fighting sticktight fleas for a year. I have always cleaned up the coop every morning and dusted with DE. Last April I noticed black specks on the combs. I have sprayed (several different types of chemicals that was recommended). I have dipped, dusted or sprayed the chickens every 5 days ( rotating between the treatment). I have cleaned, sprayed and dusted coops. I am still trying to kill them. I am my wits end. Is there anything else to do?

I have made the Permethrin at the recommended rate per water and stronger. I have used several gallons in the last year. I sprayed every 4 days and dipped the chickens. Also used Viper dust on all of the dirt in the chickens yard ( they do free range and can’t treat acres). I have tried lime and Sevin dust. I have tried the herbal limes and the sprays. The barn cats patrol around the coop at night and kill mice and rats. Also used Viper dust electronic traps in and around the coop. I don’t know what else to try.
