Little Giants are somewhat infamous for temperature spikes, especially after they've been used a few times.

Have you checked the bottom vent holes? It sounds like either a massive temp spike or suffocation.

Ok, thanks everybody. And the chicks were fluffy, not obviously wet so I am leaning toward a heat spike as well.
