That's the first sign... go to the feed and seed for some "supplies" and come home with new chickens.

It was just a matter of time

Really Yanna, I think you can manage to keep them. You are an intelligent woman and would find a way around any complaints (not that there would be any

). You can do it!

chickiebaby, thanks for the compliment. I'm all about fighting the power when it comes to nonsense. Most poultry laws are exactly that.... NONSENSE!

I have no idea of the breed of the stripey chick (I'll post over in the Breeds section) - and I think he's a rooster. Oops. He has SO much personality. And the black and white one - wild guess - is possibly an Australorp or an Easter Egger? She really seems to like burrowing into the shavings to nap.

Of course, we've had them for all of five hours. Time will tell!

Discreetly ask your local animal control authorities about the matter. Poultry may technically be illegal, but enforcement is probably complaint drive. No complaints from the neighbors, no problems for you. If you keep a few hens for eggs, your neighbors will probably never know or care - especially if you occasionally share some eggs. But if your rooster is crowing at 3 a.m., then you may be asked to dispose of all of them.

Update:

When I posted this originally, we still had a house deal going through in Cicero but hadn't closed yet. Thankfully, we never made it to the closing table - the deal fell apart.

Now we're two weeks away from closing on a house in Joliet, IL, where chickens are fine as long as they aren't running loose, destroying property or creating an odor/noise issue. But get this:

The current owners, a brother and sister, had to evict their uncle from the house because he was keeping chickens INDOORS - and subsequently they had to redo the interior of the home due to chicken damage.

Suffice it to say that I won't be mentioning anything about chickens to the neighbors straight off.

The girls will be living in a garage coop until next spring (the garage has plenty of daylight).
