Who's been hurt making their coop/run?

Glad he's pulling through.

Next time I'll bet you use a hand saw.

OMG! War stories are the best!

For me, Three coops and runs built here without injury. (knock on wood because I have two left to build and they're big ones!) But heres my story from building my mounting block (that a step ladder or crate to make getting on your horse easy, for the non-horsey folks)

When I was building my mounting block I was nailing it together, and I was on the second to last nail, and I hit the nails really hard to make them go in with less strokes. Unfortulately, I hit my thumb and it HURT!!!! So my head is swimming, but I'm nearly done, and I tough it out until I got the last nail in, and I walk into the kitchen to get some ice, and grab my gel pak from the freezer and this point I'm about blacking out from the pain. In fact, I laid down (collapsed) on the kitchen floor util I had control of my faculties.

My thumbnail turned black, and a week or so later I went to the doc to help me out and they used (you won't beleive this) a paper clip heated up with a lighter to punch a hole in the nail to drain the bloodblister beneath it. It took two years to grow back looking normal.

I learned the hard way to use pliers to hold nails I need to hammer in. I stole that idea from this old house. And I wear work gloves when I'm doing anything at all outside, especially handling wood and hardcloth. I've had too many chunks of hide pulled out over the years.

I work on a construction jobsite and see this on a regular basis. They say if you drill through the nail and drain it, it will heal much faster and hurt much less. But I'm never sure they're not pullin my leg. Course they asked me once to order a jerk file and I looked it up first cause I thought they were kidding then too. Nope.

I did not say jerk file but apparently I can't say that word here.

Uhm I think it was my post about my husband having to go to hospital twice while building our coop and run that started all this. We are still finishing our coop and I have my fingers crossed that no more injuries will occur. Last fall my husband was using his table saw and accidentally cut off his pinkie finger. This is a man who has made all types of furniture and has never paid another person in his life to do any chores on the house. Actually I think these type of men..are the ones who lose fingers. They do not fear the saw enough.
Anyways, last month while using the table saw of course a board kicked back and cut his hand in two places quite badly ..took off the tip of one finger and split another finger's nail. Twenty seven stitches in two places and a finger nail that is still coming off! Board also flew into his side and bruised his ribs. I feel really bad for the person who posted about hubby ended up having surgery due to board kickback.
New rule in our family is that Mr Dad is NOT allowed to use the table saw without another person out there to help him with the boards! My grown sons are afraid of the saw now and call it the monster. Of course dad now has a new nickname..Frodo of the nine fingers...lol our boys show no mercy..lol Run is finished but coop is still being worked on and let's not even discuss what the hardware cloth does to hands and fingers. I used to have long nails and soft hands..today they look like my husbands..nuff said. Boy o boy nothing hurts like one of the slivers of hardware cloth going up under a nail. Wozzers!

It's true, opening the nail helps. A fine drill bit does a lovely job. And if you let your kids watch they think your Superman/woman!

My friend smashed his thumb bad on the job and another guy heated a nail with the torch and used the hot nail to pierce the mashed thumbnail - he said the blood squirt was impressive, but he didn't even lose the nail. Would I have the guts to do it myself? NO, I'm chicken.

- Stupid Bird: no chicken related injuries today, unless you count all the bloody scratches DH and DS got balancing a Buff Orph on their naked arms like some falconer...
