Who's chickens are afraid of snow?

Sure it will snow here in Ohio and when it does have to shovel from chicken shed to barn(appx. 100') or they won't leave shed. Last year when we had couple feet of snow one of them flew from the path to a pile of sticks(appx.10' from path)and she stayed there until dark and I had to go retrieve her to roost in chic shed. My only problem with the paths is that they POOP along them and they use MY path from house to barn. So I wish for frequent SMALL snows to cover it.yuk.

Lol!! I am also from Maine and this morning I fed them all some warm pasta..and they came out, ate and then they all went back to bed! I have to lay hay down on the snow then they all came out..but they will not walk on the snow..they love to eat it though..but walk on it? Never!! Lots of shoveling or I am able to snowblow the large run!

We had 2 inches of snow over night about 2 weeks ago, quietly falling over night. So when I went out to let the chickens out, they had no idea that it wasn't a normal morning. I opened up the coop door and they all came bursting out together only to see all this white stuff all over!

Well needless to say, a few of them didn't come out of the coop either, until I forced them to come out, the others had terror in their eyes. Somehow they all made it to an area on a railroad tie, all lined up shaking and refused to come off. Like as if they stepped down on the stuff, they would fall in as if it was a pond of water!

I brought out some hay so they could hang out on some dry ground, but they refused to budge! So I had to pick up each of them and carry them over to the hayed area. They were not too amused with this snow.

Ridgechickes...how did your chicken die because of the snow? Mine haven't gone out yet. I am in Quebec near the Vermont border so we got what Maine got. I think I will scatter some wood shavings and try to coax them out. Thelma and Louise my two red girls are so curious and brave they may try it. The other 3 purebreds may then follow. I can tell they feel very cooped up...pun intended...and love to get out and forage so that may get the better of them...but I don't want any chicken mortality!

Mine don't like the snow at all. We got about 4" on Sat. and they didn't leave the coop till yesterday when I spread some leaves on it. It's been melting so hopefully they'll go out and free range for awhile today. I'm going to lure them out of the coop with some pumpkins that my sons used for target practice over the weekend. (already opened and ready for them to eat!

) I've also kept several bags of leaves so I can spread them over the snow throughout the winter. If we get a winter like last year, the leaves won't last very long...

Do you mean lost or died? Either way so sorry.
Can you cover the run? or maybe try trimming their flight feathers on one side. Might limit their flying abilities.

My chickens have nine lives i swear. The neighbor dog got one of my chickens this morning and we thought it was dead and gone as there were a lot of feathers. Anyway, our dog found her huddled in the snow behind a gas tank. She was fine. Revised the pen, seems to work better. They hate the snow though.

my chicken hates the snow and cold! even though i open the back door to let her out and she sees the snow outside and refuses to go out, she still stands at the back door and screams to get out. i try to let her out again and she screams at the snow for being out there. this repeats for about 45 minutes to 2 hours until she screams herself out and goes back to bed. she is very spoiled!!!!
