I only keep a few wet sponges on top rack the first 18 days....then add a hot wet sponge on the bottom rack during lock down plus a hose to pour hot water on it without opening the bator so much!!

If they dont fluff out after 10-12 hours....just wring a wet rag over them & wipe off....No Soap!!
Just plain warm water!!

I had to do that to a few of mines, last hatch!
The other chicks was peckin at it....it was the leftover fluid &/r yoke which they like anyways!!...lol

I know you said 'no soap', but I do use some Dawn Detergent on mine.

I was convinced to use this being told, "they clean oil off the shore birds with Dawn". Although even WITH the detergent, I find myself wishing for a chisel, or perhaps jack hammer. That stuff just doesn't wanna come off!!

The last few chick's feathers haven't puffed out yet. Is this normal? Should I try to clean them up?

Just went into lock down also. Candled again and ended up throwing out another one. It quit around day 15. This leaves me with 6/15 shipped eggs. Temp is good. Humidity is running at a steady 65%. I tried a dry hatch this time around hoping to get a better hatch but with shipped eggs it is hard.

Shipped eggs are hard. Ironically, my best hatch was with 1/2 of my eggs being shipped. I am REALLY struggling with the English Orp eggs, I've heard that they are hard to hatch, so picked up my first batch. Got only 3 out of 12. Next time, shipped, AGAIN, only 3 (this time out of 30), just hatched some of my own, this time, 3 out of 7. Three must be my lucky number, or unlucky, maybe.

And.... Guess what!!!?? I kept the eggs I had given up on in the bator and SURPRISE!! Got a baby today! and not just ANY baby, It's an English Orp and either blue or Splash (I can't tell for sure yet). Guess this ends my, 3 Orps Only curse!!

I agree. I'm just having a bad day from the start!!

The ponies are spooking all over the yard, one knocked down the chicken fence and got stuck inside (I zip tied it back up though) the neighbors never took them home last night so the ponies are pissy and covered in flies. Plus there was 20 mounds of poop dotting the yard. Lol

I went to catch the chickens that escaped and I literally had 7 Mosquitos eating me within seconds of going out, it's been raining for 2 weeks straight and I'm babysitting my friends infant ;luckily he's a good baby...

But I'm grumpy and tired and I need a nap.

Grrrrr. Wish I could restart the day.

This is my best ratio for shipped eggs going into lock down (8/10). And I have this bad feeling that none are going to even hatch. I don't know why, had consistent temp and humidity the first 18days and movement in the eggs. Just this bad feeling, I can not shake.

Its premature, I know, since they aren't even due til Friday.

Who did you get English Orps from? I want to get another set, but I can't find any that aren't ridiculously overpriced.

Well i my lock down day is tomorrow and so far i have 18 viable live baby's as of today from shipped eggs out of 30 so this will be my best hatch for sure if all of them make it so fingers crossed they all make it.

I opened the incubator to refill the water ring and I couldn't help but pick the eggs up! I hear internal tap tap tapping going on in there!

So at least I know that they're in there working away at the shell. Hopefully we'll get some pips soon! This waiting is taking more out of me than normal! lol

Time for some duct tape. LOL
