Who's setting with me Sept 1st-4th?

Good luck with the double yolker.

I've helped 2 chicks from their shell. They both needed vitamins(polyvisol) straight down the beak and leg splints. My first chick I helped was in the shell 2 days too long. She walked on her hocks and I splinted her thighs. She is with me today and her growth was severely stunted from being in the shell too long.

I hatched her in April and I took this photo a couple days ago. She is about the size of my bantam and is a barred rock/EE mix. I had to score and pip the shell myself. This miracle pullet is forever mine.:)

My second I helped was much weaker and had splay leg. I used bandaids and a lot of encouragement with this one. S/he is a pure Ameraucana. This chick was too big for its shell and could not zip. I hatched it after it pipped for 24 hours. S/he would of died.:(. This one is growing fine and will be going to a new home.

Wow what cuties! Your girl is soo little lol I have a little thing that isn't supposed ti be that little (Julia, in my profile pic). Julia was developing like a normal chicken but for some reason became stunted...

I had a RIR that was tiny tiny and her sis is normal (her sis is Sara, my off acting hen). That little bird was my favorite of all time, but unfortunately she wondered off in the goat pen when we lived in Florida and a hawk took the opportunity to get her... One of my dogs scared the hawk off and I buried her under my favorite tree... My other girls have never wondered off on their own after seeing their flock mate being eaten by that hawk.... Thankfully between the goats, fence with electric around the top, and my new rescue Great Pyrenees I haven't lost a chicken after that incident.

Well if my double yolk develops I will definitely need you to private message me and walk me through how to safely help! I know only to help when necessary, and thankfully you stepped in at the right times to save both of your chickens :) You are an awesome chicken mommy

yep I set my possible double yolker in the incubator. fingers crossed it works out, i know if it develops I'll have to help the second chick make a pip and probably help both out the shell but I'm willing to do so. I know that many people frown upon setting double yolks butttt I think it's a cool experiment and those kinds of stuff interest me (I'm going to college to be a vet, who could blame me for my curiosity? ha ha)
I have tried, but they both ended up dying at about day 10. If a double yolker is laid in the next few days, I will definately try it again. And I'm going to college to become a farm vet, hahaha. I can't say too much as I just started Monday. I'm a 16 year old PSEO student. Eggs should arrive in a couple of hours!

Ok so I know it is early and I shouldn't, but I could no longer contain myself and grabbed a green egg and a brown egg to candle. Both had a tiny little red dot moving in the center of the yolk(heart maybe??). jeez I'm so excited. I promised them I would leave them alone (except to turn) until I candle all of them at about day 7.... I can't wait until lock down/hatch day!
I usually end up doing the same, and yes that very well could be the heart. When we go on vacation, the eggs are left with the hens and since they are cochins, they turn broody right away. When we come back 3 days later or so, I have to take the eggs and get rid of them, mom won't alow any more chicks, it took me forever to convince her to let me get these eggs. So I always carefully open up each one, and I usually see little hearts beating in a tiny transparent body. It doesn't look like a chick at all, you just see the blood being pumped around. I always feel bad, but like I said, I can't really do anything about it.

As far as helping, I have helped a few chicks that absolutely needed it. This one made an external pip 36 hours ago so I carefully zipped it with no signs of blood. I figured he could push the halves apart himself so I put him back in. 2 hours later, he's still not out, so I go ahead and finish for him. He came out with 1 leg, the other wasn't there! I loved the little guy, and he was a partridge rooster (I didn't have one of those). But sadly, it wasn't meant to be. I gave him a little "peg leg" and he was able to get around, but on the third day, he fell into the water dish and with one leg couldn't get out. He didn't drown, but died of hypothermia from being in the water. I was really sad about losing him. And I also have one chicken with stunted growth. She hatched just fine, but then the next day, she dislocated her achilles tendon. I tried and tried, but it would not stay back in place no matter how many times I put it back and wrapped it. I finally gave up. I still have her today, I feel bad as she hops around the lawn, her leg has grown like that permanently and I don't believe she is in actual pain. She's 1 and half and she's half the size of her siblings. Since her, I have had 2 others with the same injury but I was able to put their's back into place and wrapped, and in 2 weeks, they were just like their siblings, so I had to sell them.

Can I join? Set mine August 30th though, am I to early? This is the nearest I could find to the date and would love some hatching buddies!

pfft.. got my eggs, of the 14, 7 have loose air sacs, and the other 7 have broken air sacs. I guess I'll wait the full 24 hours before setting them, but I'm not so sure that will help the ones that have broken air sacs, I also read not to turn the eggs the first 3 day to let the air sacs settle even more. This hatch most likely won't go so well. I guess I'll know in 7 days. Do any of you guys have any advice? I would love to hear a sucess story of a chick who hatched with a broken air cell right about now. Guess I'll do some research.

I'm in! I set 18 eggs on 9/1 from the August mystery swap. I have no idea as to what they are!

On August 26th I set three of my own: 2 buckeye and 1 Cuckoo Marans/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana mix egg. I found the Marans egg outside in the bushes and don't know how long it'd been there so we'll see if anything happens with it.

I don't really know. I use an egg turner, which keeps them upright and turns side to side. It's very nice to have. I candled today and the first two have nothing.:/. I'll be mad if they are infertile since I paid a lot of money for them online. Some look weird inside, but I had that happen last time and chicks hatched. I'd keep them in there and see what happens. I try not to candle as much. Otherwise, I'll be too obsessive. The quitter I could not see inside, but the egg smelled bad and I took it out. It was easy to pinpoint the quitter. I'm glad it didn't explode, it would of if I left it in.
