This was in the yard outside the run. I do have rats burrowing under the run.

It was likely a rat, and likely that you have a Great Horned Owl working your property.

My chickens are safe in their run but the rats have been a problem. I haven't seen any sign of any owls. We are in a development and see mostly crows, vultures and other small birds.
