Why are breeds allowed to become extinct???

Quote:
At some point we may need to consider stopping the moving of birds / breeds around, at least on the scale done today. For short-term it will result in reduction of breeds in a given region enabling more resources directed to breeds that remain. For long-term, assuming privately owned flocks buildup in size and numbers and hatchery birds do not swamp effort, landraces can develope with unique adaptions suitable for whatever consistent use is realized. System we have now is like a giant petstore where everybody and their brother has a multitude of fluffy butts with very little value other than aesthetics. We do eat some eggs and a few birds but in reality they are viewed as entertaning and easily thrown away pets that are too frequently crossed into the utilitarian breeds that do have potential for long-term use / survival.
