Why are egs supposed to be stored pointy end down?

Im pretty sure that only applys if you are wanting to hatch them. The air sac is at the large end, so you would want that to stay intact. As for eating eggs, I store mine ALL points UP. This way, when someone buys eggs from me, for 2.00/dozen....I know the likelyhood of them hatching is lower. Thus they are not getting cheap chickens! LOL

Chicken producers also require their egg gatherers to put eggs in points down. I think it has to do with the air that collects at the larger end, and also the eggs stay in the flats better, less chance of them getting knocked out when they are jostled.

Its because of the air sac if you have it on the bottom air wants to rise to it takes in more air than if it was at the top so causes it to go bad quicker

Interesting answers but I believe it is because the yolk tends to stick to the air cell. Thus tearing the yolk sac when you want to fry the eggs. But then that would not happen for a while after laying, when they were older. Pointy end down keeps yolk centered in the egg.

Acording to the book I just checked out, "A Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow, you "Place eggs in the carton with their large ends upward to keep the yolks centered within the whites." (Page 195)

I always put mine in the cartons pointed end up, they fit better, didn't know there was difference, after all they don't last very long, and i keep them in the fridge until sold.

I think it mostly matters for incubating. Unless maybe you are doing deviled eggs or something and want the yolks centered for appearances.
