We know the Pros and Cons and There are prolly more Scovie owners here than any other breed.

Sred, where in OK are you? You can check out the Muscovy breeder's map: http://www.muscovyduckcentral.com/breedersmap.html

I
know one fella near Guthrie that had some a few years ago. He's friends with my uncle so I could get his number.

There are some people who are trying to do away with the caruncles. I sit on the fence about the issue. On one hand, yes, there are some varieties that look gorgeous and would look better w/out them, however, they are a breed characteristic. To that end, if you don't like them there are a hundred other ducks you can get w/out 'em.

can you ever get them without the face bumples?

They are called caruncles. And no, not a pure Scovy. The girls have a lot less than the males. Some Scovies caruncles are smoother and less dramatic. If you have one with a "gypsy mask" they are more black with less red which can be quite pretty though you can't show one. If they are going to be a pet then that shouldn't be a problem. My Duke has a "gypsy mask" which is why I picked him out in the first place. Most of my boys don't have a lot of caruncling.

I just have one muscovie, it is not old enough to lay yet. I think it is pretty. When I let the ducks out in the morning it likes to go in by the chickens and walk back and forth in front of one of the pens and looks like it is scolding them, lol. Mine does fly, has flown to the roof and the other side of the pens. One day it flew somewhere and somehow scared itself. It stayed in the pen for 4-5 days before it would venture out again.

Thanks for the help! I'm near Tulsa. I found someone not too far that has some. I just can't decide if I have to have them before spring! LOL!

Ok good deal.

Something worth considering is that if you want them to be ready to lay at your place you might want to get them in Jan/Feb at the latest so that they can become accustomed to their new digs. I try to get my birds in breed pens in Feb. so that they can start hunting around for nesting spots as soon as it starts warming up. Once they decide on a spot it's hard to side track them. Also, moving almost always disrupts the laying cycle and usually takes on average 2-3 weeks before they will start again. That adds up considering they're 5 week incubators! Just something I thought worth thinking about!

I just can't get past the caruncles, although MJ has an absolutely beautiful hen that I want... but she won't sell her.

Oh well. I'm also with Wifezilla on the fact that they can fly and if they mate with any mallard-type breed, you get mules. I just don't have a use for them and in general, I don't like the breed's appearance.

The masks don't bother me a bit. Having to jump fences to get them out of the neighbor's yard before a dog got them would! LOL
