Why are my chickens dying?? Another one today

so the lump or behavior doesnt lead one way or another?

she was sitting there with her head sort of pulled into her body?

It really sounds like a resp. infection due to the lump at the front of the eye. That is one of the locations of the sinus cavities on a chicken. Most resp. infections are spread through shared waterers so be sure to clean and steralize them daily.

There are some drugs out there that are safe to use even for operations that are certified organic. You may do a search for them on your favorite search engine.

Here is what I think is going on. You keep mentioning that the birds are found in the corner. Could they be piling up at night and causing the birds at the bottom to overheat? Then when they get up and moving before dawn those birds then chill which makes them sick.

You might check them at night to see just how they are sleeping.

actually this one was sitting in a corner outside the coop Everyone was acting seemingly normal at 10 am and by 7 pm she was huddled in the corner not responding to much.

would respiratory illness be killing them that spread out?

resp illness meaning not cocci or Mareks?

I think for most part they sleep on the roosts but I will check at night and see whats happening

Thanks

ok so I talked on the phone with a poultry specialist today and he within 3 minutes said repiratory illness.......I believe he said he thought Laryngotracheitis????

seemed like no big deal. said treat with terramycin.....which I need to find a organic alternative to

but the more I read the worse it sounds....life long carriers......some states require reporting it.

Do i need to cull the whole flock ? i had planned on selling chicks from broodies?

any info appreciated

Oh holy Hannah Laryngotracheitis!!!! If you had that they would be shaking their heads and you would be seeing blood head level in your coop because they cannot clear their sinus/throat without shaking their heads. It is not treatable and culling as far as I know if the only thing to help them. Any other birds need to be inoculated against it from this point on, its deadly. If you don't see blood...possibly not.

When you said in the corner hunched up, this sounds like Coccidiosis and is treatable with Sulmet, Corid or what ever. Its best to treat and save them, especially where the next batch of birds you receive will do the same thing. Please get a milk product into them, this is not a cure, but its doing something.

def no blood in coop. i have seen a tiny bit of head shaking from one or 2 but nothing too bad and they are acting normal.

would cocci cause the cyst type thing under the eye? thats why folks were saying respiratory.

thanks again

ok so another one died today....everything was "normal" last night and this afternoon she was dead in the yard.

There were no visual sign of anything on this one, not cyst, eyes looked rather normal etc.....

Its so hard to telll.....should I send a bird to the lab for testing???? how would one go about finding info on that ?
