Why are my pullets so loud??

I have the same problem. My Red won't stop calling and she/they are free in the backyard. Is it possible to train them not to call?

The tree idea for sound absorption is a great one.

If that doesn't work, don't forget to also try 'white noise' to drown out the chicken sounds ... an old air conditioner or generator constantly humming would make your neighbors forget all about those little squawks and clucks.

You are going to need a contingency plan because if you say the neighbors are "evil" that indicates thare had been some animosity. Sooner or later they will call AC on you and you will lose your chickens because you don't have a legal leg to stand on.

You could keep them in a padded bunker but what kind of life is that?

I have a contingency plan. My friend has room in her (legal) coop for my four girls. But until that time comes, I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to find options.

We're going to move the coop closer to our house. Also, I think the white noise suggestion is a good one!

We've been sending eggs over to the neighbors in the meantime. Whether or not that works... we'll see.

We didn't know our chickens were illegal. They are allowed in our town, but we misread the boundary laws. So it's not like we did this with no sense of responsibility. "Padded bunkers" were never in our plan.

This really sucks!

Is it possible to move your chicken yard/coop away from the neighbors, plant a bunch of junipers all around. Junipers are fantastic for sound insulation. They really absorb because they are so dense.

It's a thought?

It could be that they are just yelling at you when you are around, cause they are mad at you. Mine do that when they are expecting something and don't get it. I had to move my coop and run, because of the neighbor, what a PITA, hope you can work things out. BTW, shrubs do not absorb much noise (that is a myth, it's a psychological barrier)--the best thing is a solid surface such as a concrete wall, or perhaps a biggish water feature.

I've never heard that about junipers. I'd love to plant a shrub line just so they couldn't spy on us all the time, but it's all rock by our fence line. Not enough soil for bushes to survive.

Yes, we are going to have to bite the bullet and move the coop/run. That sucker is HEAVY though. I have no idea how to do it. Chookchick, did you have to dismantle the whole thing?

The good news is that if we move it, it will be mostly disguised by a large bunch of rhodedendrums. Out of sight, out of mind? I hope?

Thanks for the suggestions and support.

Mine was only 4' by 8', but it was really heavy, because I built it with 4 by corners and very sturdy. We had 4 strong guys move it, one on each corner. I had also built a 6 by 8 run next to it that could not be moved, so that was converted into lawnmower storage (until I needed a chick run....). Out of sight, out of mind is a good strategy for borderline chickens too.

My loudest chickens are my Americauna's. They are the funniest girls !

They talk all the time. They talk to themselves. Talk to their buddies. They talk to me. Talk when they get excited. Talk when gonna lay an egg.

If they were humans they would be the equivalent of a group of teenage girls giggling and talking all the time!

I emphasize with you on the evil neighbor thing. We have one too.
