why are my turkeys eating weird things?!

I have fresh water out constantly and they have full free access to turkey starter, grower and scratch... the buggers are trying to eat everything! they were eating some millorganite organic fertilizer, potting soil, chip board, styrafoam, wood shavings... whats the deal!? I've seen chickens peck something before to see if its food, but they don't actually go around eating it!

Sorry to laugh but I know what you mean. Mine love styrofoam. I have no idea why, so I can't even begin to give you a reason.

They love to eat my shoe laces, so go figure.

Turkeys aren't too smart in some ways.
Chickens and turkeys love styrofoam. Last fall I put foam around the foundation of my house and the stinkin' turkeys followed me around pecking holes in it. Maybe the stuff tastes good or something - I'll have to try a bite.
One turkey I had butchered had a 6 penny nail in it's crop, and another had a lag screw.
