Why are people afraid to eat fresh eggs?

I have some friends in the neighborhood who loved our eggs... until I said that they were fertile.
They won't eat them now.

I suppose it's just the thought of a tiny bit of rooster semen that scares them off....

My friend got salmonella poisoning from her chickens eggs, it was because a piece of shell fell in when she cracked it. I can't remember what she made but it was something where you don't cook the eggs. Of course this could happen with any old egg though, store bought or home laid!

Now she pours boiling water over the uncracked eggs right before she uses them in uncooked recipes to kill any nasties on the shell.


Pasteurisation is when they super heat things to kill the bugs right? Ask them how could the egg have been pasteurised if the its still raw when they crack them!

Great article but salmonella vaccine? If large scale chicken farmers were using this method then why the outbreak? Sounds like corner cutting to make bigger bucks! I love having my own fresh eggs and never intend on going without chickens of my own.

If the US does require these large scale farmers to go cage free the price of eggs will skyrocket and my eggs will fly out of the coop!

With eggs, low levels of some type of radiation are used to "sterilize" them. I dont know about you, but i dont trust any Fed telling me something's ok, especially iradiated food!

Maybe you can find someone else to give your eggs to. You probably won't be able to talk your husband's coworkers into eating your wonderful eggs. It is funny, all of the people at our work love our fresh eggs. I agree with Mahonri though, I just don't mention that they are fertile. I don't hide the fact that we have a few roosters but if they don't ask me, I don't tell them.

I would not waste your time! I give eggs out to random people.Often it is to elderly people I notice on their porches as I drive buy. THEY appreciate the eggs and I ofen get told how they(or their parents) had chickens back in the day.

Some people seem to think that home eggs are more likely developed chicks inside,or as you say there is the germ fear.Why do people think store food is not germy?

Oh yeah the roo semen will get the young ones running.I was freaky for a moment,but figured *eh, more protien*.....plus we can hatch little Jack Sparrows!!!!

I say "don't waste your time with the co-workers" and only focus on the people that will fight to get your eggs.

I started selling my eggs and I was charging $3.00/doz thinking this was fair etc...well my customer list is growing and none of them pay me $3.00/dozen. They all give me $5.00/doz and my customers all repeat and rave about the eggs.

Just focus on those who truly appreciate a good egg

I know this is an old thread. I found it searching for something else, and I just HAD to put my 2 cents in.......

When I was a little girl, I had a LOT of Farmer relatives. My maternal Grandmother (RIP Grammy) was from Southwest MO and had 13 brothers and sisters, most of them farmers, you know, chickens, cows, pigs, crops, etc. Most all of what they ate came right off the farm. We would visit every summer. I refused to eat the eggs, drink the milk, bacon, any meat...you get the picture. It tasted "funny" I ate a lot of bread til I found out they made it with eggs! After all, I was from the big city. We got our food from the A & P, not our backyards!

Back in those days, you ate what was put in front of you or you didn't eat. It goes without saying that I went hungry a lot.

As an adult, however, with a much more sophisticated

palette, and since my first farm fresh egg, I couldn't nor wouldn't eat another store bought egg. On the rare occasion I go out for breakfast, I have waffles. No need for that at all any more now that my ladies are on a roll!!

My next big adventure (maybe next year

) will be a milk cow and maybe a pig......

I agree with everything said here....Don't waste your precious jewels (or breath) on folks who can't or won't appreciate it!

BTW, my best friend since high school is still in the Chicagoland area. I, of course, told her about my chickens and all the research I had been doing and promised her I would send her some when they started laying. That is, until I made the fatal mistake of telling her that 2 of them turned out to be roos and the part they play. Her first reaction was to say that she probably wouldn't be interested in "liquid chickens"

She's my BEST friend...I'll get her to come 'round!

I hear ya! I was having to ask the farmer across the street, I mean "road"

, DAYS and DAYS before I would need more eggs so he could put some aside for me!
