This morning I got up and went out to tend to the birdies and the first thing I saw was one of my Guinea squashed on the road. First of all, I live on a corner where there is a stop sign so close I can throw a rock and hit it. So there is NO reason

anybody would be going so fast they couldn't stop to let a bird cross the road.
rant.gif
Not only did they run it over but they drug it all the way to the stop sign which proves they didn't even stop after they hit it. I was scraping pieces of her for about 20 feet. I was so mad

Now I have 1 hen and 3 roosters which means more fighting. I already have 1 that got beat up and now hides in the bushes when it sees the others coming. The hens where making nests and getting to start laying too.

Last year I had a puppy that wouldn't come to me and just ran across the road right in front of a car. Of course she got hit and killed. Did anybody stop? NOOOOOOOOO! I can understand not being able to stop with something that just shows up out of nowhere but the Guinea always walk across and don't dart out in the road. The only pen I can put them in are right next to the house by the bedroom and DH works midnights. I guess i'll just sell them instead of having them fighting over the only female or getting ran over.

I feel your pain.

[watch one get hit tomorrow now that I said that]

My biggest issue is my guineas fly into the moving cars and getting killed.

Ive watched it happen 2 times now. Thank God they didnt breck any windows or the driver hit a tree to miss the bird.

One day I watch some kids come down the road and they tried to hit a bird on the road, now that p'd me off.
somad.gif
Then one day I was trying to get the birds off the road, almost got hit myself, so now I dont do that anymore.
rant.gif
I saw one get hit one day and I was soooo mad, I got the dead bird and followed the truck into town, I was going to put the dead bird the bed of his truck and see how long it took for him to find it there,

but the driver was responding to a fire and didnt go into town. So I didnt leave the dead bird in his truck.

I am really sorry about your guinea and your puppy. Some people can be so thoughtless, I don't understand it. I ran over a wild rat or some field rodent on the way to work one day, and couldn't get it out of my mind for days. I can't imagine not stopping for a pet or livestock animal. I would be so upset. Of course, there are those sicko's that actually TRY to run over small animals

I just don't understand some people.

I'm sorry that happend... poor thing.
Do yo have your birds fenced in so they cant get in the road? Thats what i would do to help prevent it happening again.
Also glad noone got into an accident because of the bird in the road...
Did she get out of the fence or something?

to the people who hit your bird.
I truly don't understand how someone can do this; I think it might have something to do with the lack of responsibility. If they had ever been on the other side of the equation, then I think they wouldn't have made that choice

Here's wishing for the guinea fairy to visit you too.

Two days ago, a Lavender Guinea male showed up on our property screaming. I've never had guineas, and none of our neighbors do either. So, here's wishing for luck like that to go to people like you who really need it (but with hens instead).

for the puppy.

How do you know for SURE the bird was hit on purpose? Thats whats confusing me...

All the times i've been outside I've watched them slowly walk across the street to the field. The only time they fly is to fly to their roost in the tree at night or when the puppies decide to chase them. They always run for the woods behind our house then. If they didn't hit it on purpose they just wasn't paying attention to the road which is just stupid because there is a stop sign right there and if they run the sign they could get slammed by a car on the highway.

From the place the bird got hit which was by the tire to where it was drug they had to be going slow enough to be able to stop. If not they had to slam on their breaks just to be able to stop in time for the sign. That early in the morning they where most likely going to work and it is most likely their regular route and anybody that drives by here can see the birds. I have seen people turn the corner onto this road and actually look around like they are watching out for the birds. And some coming from down this road towards the highway look around as if looking for animals. Then there are those that fly around the corner to where they actually drive on part of my driveway. I have to make my grandsons stay off my driveway to avoid them getting hit.

All my birds except the guinea are pinned up and have runs. I only let the juvenile silkies out because they don't have a run on that pen and they always stay close to their pen. The guinea where bought to help control the bug population. Penning them would defeat their purpose. I also don't have a fence around my place. There is a fence along the side the road but they walk right through it or walk around which is where the one got hit at. Twenty feet from the stop sign people should be going slow. Not fast enough to drag the bird under their tire till they did stop. Well the bird was found about half way. It was guts that got dragged. Really gross to have to scrape off the road first thing in the morning.

The fence that goes along the property by the road isn't like chain link fencing. The guinea can go right through the big holes. There is also a steep slope they have to walk down before they get to the road. The dirt is red or a blonde color, they are pearl guineas. They can be seen.

It was hit by either irresponsibility or on purpose. The puppy was an accident but the person didn't even stop.

I have hit a few animals that couldn't be avoided and I cried for hours. It was always at night and no houses around to look for an owner. I will stop for a squirrel if I can or slow so it can get out of the way. I onces stopped for turkey to cross the road on a highway. Praying nobody would hit me in the process. I've seen people not even hit their brakes. I watch the road so hard when i'm driving because not only am I trying to keep from having an accident but i'm also always trying to look for a darting animal. We have alot of deer, coons, foxes, coyotes, cats, dogs, squirrels, turtles, opossums, ets around here. Alot to look out for.
